Review of Ecover Delicates washing liquid
Ecover is an international company who produce ecological detergents and cleansing agents. The company was founded in 1980 in Belgium. Ecover was the first company to market a phosphate-free washing powder even before phosphates were branded as a problem.
Ecover products are made from natural, sustainable plant-based ingredients and their manufacturing processes are powered by green energy sources. The Ecover range includes laundry, dishwashing and many other household cleaners. Ecover are against animal testing and their products are as environmentally friendly a possible, the range is suitable for use in households where drainage is via a septic tank.
**Delicates Washing Liquid**
Presented in a recyclable bottle this laundry liquid has been produced to care for delicate fabrics such as woollens and silks. Ecover Delicates is gentle on your laundry; get effective at cleaning and softening the fabrics. Ecover also advise that this product is safe to use on coloured laundry as it will not fade the colours.
The bottle I am currently using contains 500ml of clear laundry liquid and I believe it can be purchased in larger quantities too. The 500ml size will was up to 11 washing machine loads.
The bottle is fitted with a purple screw top cap which also doubles as a measuring cup. The liquid is lightly scented with a subtle lavender fragrance and it can be used for hand washing or in the washing machine. For best results, Ecover recommend 1 ½ capfuls should be poured into the dispenser drawer of your washing machine and for hand washing 2/3rds of a capful should be diluted in 5 litres of warm water.
Even though this is a non-bio liquid, I have obtained good results using the recommended dosage of Ecover over the complete range of my laundry requirements. Admittedly with my family consisting of just a retired adult couple, we do not have grubby work clothes or food stained toddler's garments to wash, so perhaps that type of laundry would require pre-treating or similar treatment.
I have had no problem with this product affecting my skin or causing any discomfort even though I do not use rubber gloves for hand washing.
**Price and Availability**
I bought my first bottle for the bargain price of £1.25 from Sainsbury's.
I have checked on line today and see that this product is available in most of the major supermarkets for around £2 to £2.50, which I consider a fair price to pay.
**My Thoughts and Conclusion**
I bought this product originally to take on a motorhome touring holiday, the main reason I bought it had little to do with the ecological principals of Ecover and more to do with the shape of the bottle! It is a compact, fairly slim bottle which fitted perfectly in the scaled down cupboards of a motorhome! Also being a laundry liquid for delicate fabrics I felt it could double as a universal laundry product enabling me to wash absolutely everything and not have to worry about special cleaners for specific garments.
The results were so good that I was very impressed and continued purchasing this after the holiday was over.
Ecover Delicate Laundry Liquid leaves clothing and other textiles smelling fresh and clean. It is not a particularly lingering scent but the washing certainly does smell good. I never use separate fabric softeners on my laundry and even if I did, with this product it would not really be necessary.
I prefer to use environmentally friendly products where eve possible and although they can cost a few pennies more than regular brands, I am happy to continue using Ecover laundry liquids.
I would recommend this product to others and am awarding it a 5* rating.
Thank you for reading

I have used Ecover products for quite some time, however I had, until recently, not tried this delicate liquid. I decided to buy this as I have some rather expensive delicate underwear that needs very careful handling, and this product certainly does that. Firstly, it meets my very rigorous demands in terms of being kind to the environment, not being tested on animals, doing the job it claims to do, and also smelling very very nice indeed! It has a subtle fragrance, which I like as I don't like to be overwhelmed by the smell of washing/conditioning liquids, especially if I happen to be wearing a good perfume which is overpowered by my laundry products. This liquid will also deal with most average dirt it may have to deal with, however it IS a gentle product, for tougher marks, I would say it may not remove them and you may need to use Ecover stain remover on the mark before washing, IF you feel your garment can cope, although even that is very gentle. I have found all the Ecover range to be very efficient, economical and of course environmentally friendly, and this member of the family is no exception. I would and have, recommended this to many friends and will continue to do so. If you have delicate fabrics, that demand gentle treatment then this will do the job.
After having used a lot of Ecover products of late and being rather pleased with them generally when I ran out of laundry products I turned to the range to see what I could try out. I do a lot of what I think of as delicate washing on whites, lace trimmed dresses and woollen jumpers and cardi's and so on and so when I spotted this I decided to give a go simply cost the price was right for me!
Slightly frosted but still rather see through bottle what holds 500ml of the washing liquid within it and it has a screw on/off purpled coloured lid/cap to the top of it. On the front of the bottle I am told that it is Ecological Washing liquid 'For fine fabrics and wool', Ecover Delicate 'For people who care' and the wool symbol is displayed as is a leaf pattern and being told it is suitable for hand washing ans machine washing alike. On the back of the bottle other information listed includes being told a bit about the product, instructions for using it are given, ingredients and size are stated and contact details for Ecover are given. It's a nice simple bottle, easy to use and the information is easy to follow and very well laid out.
A Bit About The product According To The Information listed On The Back Of The Bottle:
Ideal for fine fabrics, silks and woollens
Preserves the softness of delicate fibres and protects their colour
Respects your skin due to plant based ingredients
No petrochemical based ingredients
Optimum level of biodegradability - far exceeds legislative requirements
minimum impact on aquatic life
Against animal testing
Suitable for septic tanks
Instructions are clearly stated on the back of this bottle as to how to use it depending on whether you are hand washing, machine washing and what sort of water your washing in (I.E soft, medium, hard water) and the sort of soiling you have on your clothes. Basically though this is designed for not too dirty fabrics and you empty one or two capfuls into the drawer of your machine and if hand washing use between half and one capful to about 5L of warm water.
The liquid itself has a good consistency. Not too runny like water but it is transparent and and off white colour with a natural sort of planty aroma to it which is perfectly pleasant but not too in your face or anything. I have personally used this in the washer machine and by hand and found it to be great!
I have washed silks, lace and of course my woollens with this and found it to effectively clean and freshen my clothes and even if I have used fabric softener along with this I can still delicately smell the fragrance on my fabrics. It doesn't seem to remove really badly dirty stains but on light stuff it really does clean well. I mean bear in mind this is for use on delicate fabrics so I'm not using pre-wash or putting the temperature above 40C!
It leaves fabrics though clean and like I say very fresh, fabrics feel softened in a really nice way and no residue is left in the clothes and I have found this to be the case with both hand washing and using the machine though of course it's down to me when hand washing to make sure it's all rinsed out of course!
A great product for delicate but not too dirty fabrics in my opinion and this will be a firm favourite from now on, on my shopping list! Great stuff once again from Ecover!
I paid £2.20 in Asda for my 500ml size bottle of this and it is also available in a 1 Litre size at about £3.90 a bottle. Available in all good supermarkets etc
