Advantages: Lovely smelling, eco-friendly, mild on skin

Disadvantages: Nasty products are cheaper

My skin, especially on my hands, tends to get irritated by anything too chemical-y, so I try not to give it any excuse to flare up. This means avoiding cheap and nasty washing up liquid. In fact it also means avoiding expensive and nasty washing up liquid. Of course, I could use my mum's approach - "I'd love to wash up but it makes my ahands sore...." - but in my house no one but no one else is going to do it, and paper plates would cost a fortune! I could also wear gloves - yuck, no thanks.

Luckily there is a solution. Ecover, 'For People Who Care' - in the original Camomile and also in my new favourite Lemon and Aloe Vera flavours, never ever irritates my skin.

As well as being 'Naturally mild on your hands', it is also a fantastic 'ecological' product, and equally mild on the environment. Ecover is streets ahead (or country miles ahead?) of other manufacturers when it comes to biodegradability. The bottles can be reused or recycled and the liquid uses natural ingredients that have the 'minimum impact on aquatic life'. I particularly like the fact that it doesn't produce masses of bubbles - it cleans beautifully without foaming, and as you only need a small squirt, it lasts for ages.

There are cheaper 'eco' products available. I tried the Tesco Naturals range but the price difference was tiny and it dried my skin. Also, I don't trust the big companies to do much more than pay lip service to environmental issues. Whilst other companies offer a green alternative to try to grab the business of those of us with an environmental conscience - Ecover's whole raison d'étre is environmentally friendliness. So Tesco - if you think your Naturals range is so great - why do you sell the other environment-strangling stuff?
