Advantages: Reasonable price, works, good for you and the environment

Disadvantages: Can be hard to find sometimes

The first time I took my son to the seaside we went to Hastings. The beach there has been in the news recently due to the amount of pollution on it. He looked at the sea, pointed at the area of water where sewage was being pumped into the sea and said 'bubbles', it was months before we were able to persuade him to it was called the sea.

Not surprisingly really, the amount of detergents that are pumped into the sea, it really is a mass of bubbles around such outlets. So here is a way we can all help to prevent this worrying trend getting worse.

Ecover washing up liquid comes in two sizes, 1 litre and 500ml, but in my local Tescos they only stock the 1 litre size. It is an environmentally friendly detergent, based on calendula (a herb extract), whey (as in curds and), and coconut oil. It cleans without making as much foam as traditional washing up liquid, because it works in a different way.

The fact it has whey in it also means that it is very kind to your skin. It's a product often used for cosmetic purposes, but it also helps to clean. If you have eczema or dry skin you may find this liquid less harsh on your skin than most.

This washing up liquid cleans as well as any, it's around the same price, and its good for you skin and the environment, so I can't really see any reason not to use it.

The only possible drawback is that it doesn't have a strong fragrance, so you can smell the food on the washing up when the hot water hits it. To be honest, I don't think this is really a big problem, as you don't really need your plates to smell like flowers or whatever anyway.

They also do lots of other cleaning products, for example washing powder and dishwasher tablets.
