Fairy Active Bursts
Advantages: Good cleaning power for everyday use
Disadvantages: Need a hot wash to dissolve
We had never had a dishwasher in our previous homes so when we moved into our current property I was looking forward to having less washing up to do. My excitement was short lived when after a couple of months water started flooding back up the drain into our dishwasher. It turned out that in the time previous to us moving in dishwasher tablets had been building up in our drain eventually blocking it. We were amazed when a football sized ball of soap fat was removed and were advised to only run the dishwasher on hot programs. This disappointed me as I found my quick 35 degree economy wash really useful. I started looking at different brands of dishwasher table to find something that would dissolve and found these Fairy All in One (Previously known as Fairy Active Bursts)
The dishwasher tablets come in a large plastic pouch with an easy tear top, it is resealable which I find handy for when I am cramming them into the cupboard as I know they wont end up all over the place. The packaging is recyclable but unfortunately not in the area where I live.
Using the tablets
Each tablet is about an inch square and is a mixture of powder and green liquid in a dissolvable plastic wrapping. You need to make sure that your hands are dry when you pick one of these out or you risk making the other pouches wet and them then sticking to each other, having done this I always dry my hands first.
The pouch just goes in the dishwasher dispenser drawer and you are good to go, no need to add separate salt or rinse aid. I always use the 50 degree wash and very rarely a pouch doesn't dissolve. However we haven't had any further drain problems in the last 6 years so I'm confident that they do dissolve and wash away well rather than becoming solid again in my drain pipe.
These all in one pouches do a really good job at getting lightly dirty plates and cutlery clean. If things have medium to heavily dirty though I find the results aren't as great and I end up needing to wash items by hand afterwards which defeats the object of having a dishwasher.
They do a good job on glass and metal giving a nice shine.
I usually use the lemon fragrance so when I use these original ones I miss the citrus fragrance when I open the dishwasher as these don't seem to have much in the way of fragrance.
Price and availability
This product is available in 2 sizes 26 and 38 tablets. The 26's are usually £5 in Tesco but are on offer at 3 for £10 and 38's are usually £10 but can currently (October 2012) be found for £5 in Sainsbury's.
Would I recommend?
Yes if you don't have a lot of really dirty dishes or you want to use the economy option on your dishwasher. I haven't found a cheaper option that works as well and I don't want to risk my drains getting blocked again so will be sticking with Fairy.
Summary: An acceptable dishwasher tablet from Fairy
