Advantages: Works well, long lasting

Disadvantages: more expensive

There seem to be a fair few cheap washing up liquids on the market and I seem to have tried most of them. The question is though whether buying the cheap brands is worth it or is it just a false economy? I hadn't given it much thought until on a recent trip to Sainsburys my husband came home with a 650 ml bottle of fairy original washing up liquid instead of our usual store brand! I was all set to moan that it was a waste of money buying the more expensive brands when I noticed a sticker at the top of the plastic bottle claiming that it 'lasts 50% longer than the next best selling brand!' Well. If it were true perhaps it wasn't such a bad buy after all so I decided that I had better put it to the test!

The liquid comes in a plastic recyclable bottle and is almost a bottle green in colour. As the bottle is clear plastic it is always possible to see how much you have left. It is apparently a concentrated formula and therefore the consistency is quite thick (although not quite as thick as I would have expected). There is a small nozzle at the top through which to pour and you will also need to squeeze the bottle. I find that you only need to pour a very small quantity in order to get a washing up bowl full of soapy bubbles.

As I have a dishwasher, I don't use this washing up liquid for everything but I do use it for the non stick pans, knives and the casserole dishes that have burnt on stains. I find with all these items that washing them in Fairy Original seems to bring them up sparkling clean with just the minimum of effort. It seems to be particularly good on really greasy things too! With the really burnt on stains I like to leave these soaking in the soap sudded water. By doing this, I found that when I come to use a scouring pad on them everything comes off very easily. Therefore I would have to say that Fairy Original is very effective and it does smell quite pleasant too.

I do tend to use the Fairy Original every day and I've had this bottle about a month and I only seem to have used about a third of the bottle so it really does seem to be meeting its claim. Thinking back to some of the cheaper washing up liquids I have used, I did seem to get through the bottles much quicker than I am getting through the Fairy Original. We have the 650 ml bottle which costs £1.35 from Sainsburys and you can also buy a 450 ml bottle for 98 pence. This is quite expensive compared to some of the other washing up liquids in Sainsburys such as Morning Fresh which costs 78 pence for 500 ml or Sainsburys apple washing up liquid which is 70 pence for 500 ml. However, if you bear in mind its effective cleaning power and its ability to last longer, paying that little extra could be well worth it in the long run.

Overall, you can't help but think that Fairy liquid is the best washing up liquid and you are pretty much guaranteed it will do the best jobs on your dirty pots and pans!

Summary: Cleans everything really well!

I think Fairy is the best by far. I actually buy the lavender version which smells lovely too! Great review!
