Advantages: Cheap, smells nice, doesn't irritate skin
Although we do have a dishwasher, I usually find myself washing up at least once a day as I hate the idea of the dirt from our plates etc clogging up the dishwasher pipes/drain. Fairy is a brand of washing up liquid that I know and trust and I almost always choose this brand over others.
Fairy washing up liquid is available in a range of different types (eg platinum & non bio) as well as different fragrances. The fragrance choice includes original, which I think is unscented, apple & lime and lemon. I usually buy the lemon scented one as I find that has a very pleasant, refreshing scent - this is a particular advantage when I'm washing up plates and pans etc after cooking a big meal as it gets rid of the smell of cooking/food and it makes the kitchen smell that bit fresher.
I usually buy this from one of the local supermarkets as all of them (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's etc) sell it, but it is also available from discount stores and various websites. Prices do vary and this is often on offer such as buy one get one free. At full price though I pay around £2.00 per 870 ml bottle which I think is a bargain considering how long a bottle lasts - a little goes a long way. Smaller bottles are also available and the non bio version comes in a much larger bottle.
Fairy claim that this washing up liquid 'gives you brilliantly clean dishes' and 'up to 50% more grease cutting power than the next best selling brand'. The washing up liquid comes in a transparent, sturdy (but squeezable) plastic bottle which is basic in design. All of the information needed is on the bottle and the bottle has a flip lid meaning that not too much of the liquid comes out at once, avoiding waste.
The liquid itself is like a thin gel. It's runny but not too runny and I find that a medium sized blob is more than enough to clean up a day's worth of pots and pans. The lemon scented one that I use is yellow, which obviously reflects the scent. The liquid bubbles up nicely and although the smell is strong it's not over powering. Considering how many chemical-sounding ingredients are in this I'm actually suprised by how nice it smells and the scent isn't overlly artificial.
The liquid is great at leaving plates clean and shiny and I find that it's brilliant at cleaning grubby pots and pans - I use a bit of this when I'm scrubbing baking trays etc when they have dried on grease or food - a small blob of this on a damp scouring pad does the job. I do usually wear rubber gloves while doing the dishes but on the few occasions that I haven't and this had made contact with my skin I've had no issues with irritation or redness - and I have really sensetive skin!
Overall, this brand of washing up liquid is affordable and effective. Recommended.
