Fairy Non Bio Gel
Advantages: Cleans well, easy to squeeze bottle, nice fragrance
Several months ago, my partner felt like his skin might be getting irritated by the laundry detergent I was using on our sheets and clothes. This meant saying goodbye to my faithful Bold, and trying out some alternative brands.
My first stop was the Fairy Non-Bio Gel, as I had some in the cupboard already - I only used it on a particular woolly jumper which specified non-bio detergent, so the bottle was reasonably full. The gel comes in two sizes, I had the smaller size at just under 600ml which claims to contain enough gel for 16 washes. The price is £4 from Tesco.
The Fairy gel is used in the same way as any other laundry gel - the lid of the bottle is the cup into which you squeeze the gel, and then place it inside the washing machine on top of your laundry. I find the gel is easy to squeeze from the bottle, which seems to be almost identical to Bold gel bottles; unlike supermarket own brands, these bottles keep their shape and it is easy to squeeze almost every last drop from them.
In terms of cleaning power, I find Fairy to be as good as any of the other leading brands. I've always tended to use biological detergent until I decided to try this as my main detergent, but I have found that this Fairy performs as well as any of the biological detergents I used. It doesn't remove stubborn stains or marks, but then I find that they need special treatment no matter what brand of detergent I am using.
Although I almost always use a fabric conditioner along with the detergent, which fragrances my laundry, I have used this Fairy Non-Bio Gel on its own on a few occasions. I have used gels before which have left an unpleasant fragrance on my laundry when not used with a fabric conditioner, but the Fairy gel is not one of them. The laundry tends not to have a very strong fragrance when I only use the gel, but what fragrance is there is pleasant. It is not a fruity or floral fragrance, but rather that delicate fragrance that is recognisable from any sensitive laundry product.
And as for the reason I started using this as a main detergent - it isn't irritating my partner's skin (or mine for that matter).
I have tried supermarket own brand non-bio gels since establishing that this Fairy Non-Bio seemed to do the trick, as they are cheaper, but Fairy is my first choice, although I tend to only buy it when it is on offer now. I would definitely recommend it if you need a non-bio detergent, or you're looking for something for sensitive skin.
