Fairy Non Bio Gel
Advantages: washes well, kind to skin, easy to use
I have used Fairy Non-Bio for a fair few years but mainly in the powder form. I use non-bio as my husband is sensitive to biological washing powder and I am also worried about using this for my son's clothes. Fairy is probably one of the best known non-bio brands and is famed for being gentle on delicate skin. When I moved house, I had trouble finding a cupboard in my kitchen big enough to accomodate the rather large box of powder I had so that is why I decided to give the gel a try.
The gel comes in smaller, rounded squeezy bottles - these are a much nicer sized to fit on the shelves in my cupboard. On top of the bottle there is a plastic cap that can be removed. The gel can be squeezed from the bottle into this and this can be put in the washing machine drum during the wash cycle to use. The bottle states that this contains enough product for 16 washes and it cost me around £6. This works out a bit more expensive that the powder but I now stock up when I see it on offer so can get it a bit cheaper than this - this works out to be 37.5p a wash, which is quite expensive I think. Currently, there is an offer at Sainsbury's of 2 for £7 (March 2013) and £3.50 a bottle is a much more reasonable price to pay.
The gel is a bright blue in colour and smells lovely and fresh - for those familiar with Fairy, it has that very distinctive scent. I fill the cap for a wash and use with a fabric softener in the tray. It is quick and easy to use and prevents the mess that can be made when spilling powder. During the wash, it seems to lather well and, after the wash my clothes are left clean and smelling fresh. I find that a bottle lasts about the 16 washes advertised - you can stretch this out a bit by applying less to eash wash but this depends how much washing you have per wash. It is also very kind to skin and has not caused any issues in our household.
The added bonus of this is that I don't have to clean out my powder tray anymore or find bits of undissolved powder on my washing. At full price, it is a little too expensive than I am willing to pay but if you can find this on a decent offer I would definitely recommend giving it a go.
Summary: good gel
