Advantages: Good for sensitive skin, smells nice, lasting softness
Disadvantages: Pricey
In our house, we have always tended to go for Fairy Non-Bio. I have sensitive skin which can come out in a rash if I use the wrong product with the wrong chemicals in it, or so my mum tells me!!! My son is also the same, and so we are always careful about the washing powder we use.
Fairy Non-Bio has, as one of its boasts, the right balance of chemicals to be more suited to sensitive skin. It has won countless awards because of this. The non-biological aspect of this means that it is suitable for all types of skin, although those with extremely sensitive skin may still be affected.
The powder has a lovely smell. It smells clean and fresh, and isn't oo fragrant. Too m any washing up powders seem to concentrate too much on the fragrance, and as a result the clothes, once dry, smell okay for a few minutes and then the smell is gone, while the feel isn't as soft. Fairy manages to create a fresh, lingering smell that isn't overpowering and combines it with soft clothes coming out of your machine.
Naturally, whether you have hard or soft water can make a difference as to how a washing detergent/powder works, and so Fairy do advise using their fabric softener in conjunction with this if needed. We just use the powder and it seems to be fine.
Occasionally we'll use Persil, which I find has a less nice fragrance, and is a bit hit and miss with how it reacts with my skin. On bad days for me, Fairy is much better than Persil.
You can get Fairy Non-Bio in various different sized boxes. We tend to buy one of the bigger boxes, and currently have the 2.16kg box. Fairy suggest you get 27 washes out of this, but it depends on what size washing machine you have and if you want to use any extra powder for toughter stains. This box comes in at around the £7 mark depending on whether there is an offer on or not. I find that Tesco usually have either Fairy or Persil on offer. Last time, this box was on offer, more recently, I have taken advantage of a big box of Persil on offer.
I would say that Fairy and Persil definitely are the top two brands for me. I would normally choose Fairy over Persil as it is easier for my skin, although I like the subtle and lasting fragrance and effects of both.
Summary: The top washing up powder, in my opinion
