Fairy Tab Dishwasher Tablets
Advantages: Wash most things well
Disadvantages: Some residue on items, some streaks
I was so excited about getting a dishwasher last year, I know that sounds sad but I couldn't wait to be able to just put the washing up in a machine and have it all washed for me while I got on doing other things. The one thing I didn't realise until afterwards though was the cost of dishwasher tablets. The machine came with a small starter pack of finish quantum tablets and as I was used to these, I continued buying them for a while but then decided to try some cheaper ones as they were so expensive. These fairy ones were on offer in Tesco at £6 for a pack of 38 tablets. They are still around this price today when on offer however I've noticed that the packet has been reduced to 34 tablets. At full price, they're around £11 but the supermarkets rarely seem to charge full price. In my opinion, even for the bigger pack and offer price, this still seemed quite expensive for what are 38 small little tablets full of washing up ingredients! But, I have to say most of the branded dishwasher tablets are around this price, sometimes more expensive. As fairy are such a massive name, I was expecting big things from them.
I have now tried three different types of tablet in total - these fairy ones, the finish all in one tablets and the finish quantum tablets. I have to say that I think these fairy ones are close to the finish all in one tablets in cleaning capability but not as good as the finish quantum tablets but to be fair, these fairy ones are cheaper than the quantum. They are probably more comparable in price to the all in one finish tablets really. Fairy do also make a platinum range of dishwasher tablets, I assume this is their equivalent of the finish quantum as they are a similar price.
I use the lemon fairy all in one tablets, however they also do an original fairy all in one tablet too. The two types come in the same sizes and prices and from what I remember the packaging is also very similar. They come in a tall green plastic pouch that can be sealed at the top when not in use. The packaging makes them very easy to store. They state that they have to be kept well out of reach of children.
The tablets are more like capsules that inside have powder on one side and a yellow liquid on the other side. They are quite fat in size compared to other tablets I've used - I worry when I shut the dishwasher tablet compartment that it's going to pop open and release the liquid - I tend to shut the compartment, then shut the dishwasher very quickly before it has chance to pop, although I've never known it to pop so this might just be me being a bit overcautious! It does state on the packaging that they've been designed for use in all leading dishwashers and there are directions on the back of the packet on how to use best for your water type. I personally don't use anything else with them.
I find with these fairy tablets that most of our dishwasher items come out nice and clean on a standard wash of 1 hour 50 minutes, I was concerned I was always going to notice the lemon scent on everything but I never really notice it at all really. I have noticed a few water streaks on the plates and I've also noticed that some glasses come out with a residue in the bottom, meaning I have to then rinse them out and dry them again, although this may not be down to the tablet, it might be from the way I've stacked the glasses in the dishwasher. There has been odd times that things have come out as dirty as they went in but this is quite limited to certain foods - for example anything that has been used to cook eggs always comes out needing another wash, even small utensils like a spatula just used to turn the egg usually still has remains on it and needs to be rewashed. Sometimes I have noticed a slightly soapy taste when eating from a plate or with cutlery as though the tablet contents hasn't been rinsed off them properly. I've never noticed this with any of the other tablets I've used previously, so can't really blame the dishwasher itself.
It sounds as though I have a lot of complaints about these tablets but I honestly don't on the whole. The majority of things do come out nice and clean on a normal wash, it just seems that not everything comes out the way I would expect. The other issues I've experienced are quite minor. With these tablets I was just hoping for a little better with fairy having such a good name. Comparing these to more expensive tablets, then I would probably choose to use these and make do with the issues outlined as none are massive problems and it means I can save money every time I purchase a pouch.
I personally just don't think they live up to the usual fantastic fairy name. I use other fairy products - I am a massive fan of their washing powder and before I got the dishwasher I used the original fairy liquid, in my opinion the best one around. It just seems to me that these tablets are above average but not exceptional like I've thought of everything else they've produced. I've decided to rate them 3 stars overall - I think this is fair because they do wash well but I have to take a couple off because of the few minor issues I've experienced with them.
I would recommend them to others because of the price and the fact that on the whole they do clean things quite well - although if cost was put aside, I'd always choose the finish quantum first.
Thanks for reading :o)
Summary: Good but not fantastic
