Febreze Vanilla Cream Candle

I recently thought I would do the charitable thing and decided to take on a lodger for a couple of weeks. This lodger was the cutest, cuddliest friendliest little thing you could possibly imagine. Unfortunately in addition he was an extremely hairy mongrel with the name Blue. His poor owner was having a hip replacement operation so I decided that I would take charge of her pet. In fact that's not right Blue actually took charge of me!!! Having a very rats tails coat particularly when it rained and trust me it never stops doing this in Glasgow he became the pongiest little doggy I have ever had the misfortune of sharing a house with. (only joking it was actually a rather nice experience which my son loved). Anyway to get to the point I spent a considerable length of time in my local Morrisons looking for suitable deodorising sprays to try and hide Blues rather embarrassing odour problem and to hopefully make my house smell a little bit more appealing. Amongst the products I ended up buying to combat this problem I purchased a Febreze light and refresh vanilla cream candle. Owing to its promise of being able to eliminate odours and freshen the air.

I have always been a fan of vanilla smells and this was one of the main reasons that I chose this particular product. It looked slightly bigger than some of the similar type items on the shelf. Furthermore the packaging was pretty and I have always been a bit of a sucker for nicely presented things. I have also bought previous items from the Febreze range so I was confident that what I was buying would be a quality item.

The candle itself comes in a square outer cardboard container. It is peach and white in colour. The packaging states that the item is the vanilla cream version of the product and that it lasts up to 30 hours. This was ideal for me as the plan was to burn the candle for a couple of hours in the evening to get rid of the lingering smells of wet dog. The rear of the packaging states that the candle combines light scents of fruit topped with rich vanilla and cinnamon, which will remind you of savoury vanilla in its purest form!!!!! The actual candle itself comes in a rather attractive glass which is slightly curved and which is refreshingly heavy. The candle is an attractive vanilla shade (this is the larger portion of the candle and contains the scented wax, with a cream coloured centre. (This apparently is the odour eliminating core.) Then obviously the wick.

I would suggest reading the back of this product before making a purchase as this item is not suitable for everyone. There is a warning which advises that those with perfume allergies should use this product with caution. It also states that air fresheners do not replace good hygiene practices. (we thought that we had quite a hygienic house well until the dog started licking the water out of the toilet and dripping it all over my downstairs carpet that is!!!! In addition there are a series of pictures on the packaging which tells you not to leave the candle unattended, not to burn too close too curtains, don't leave next to cards, ensure that the wick is trimmed and not longer than 1cm before lighting the product. Never handle the glass when the product is lit and don't pour water on top of it. All in all pretty straight forward. One that I didn't observe was not to burn in the presence of moving animals. Oops sorry Blue boy!!!! It states that failing to follow instructions could result in fire hazard, personnel injury or broken glass. Anyway that's the product specifications out of the way. Now to the test does it actually work.

I trimmed the wick and lit the candle perhaps to eagerly. Not much scent was apparent for about the first half an hour. After which time I did become aware of a faint fragrance of vanilla. This scent became stronger and stronger and eventually the perfume filled my entire house. It was extremely pleasant for about the first hour or so. After which time I felt that it became very over-powering and rather sickly and did start to make my nose and eyes tingle a little bit. Gladly though the smell of wet dog did disappear which was a blessing. I then had to decide which I would prefer the smell of sickly vanilla or pongy pooch. I have to say no contest I opted for the candle. The problem with this item was that when you blow it out it fills the room entirely with smoke so the fragrance disappears and you smell stale smoke. The next time I used it however I combated this problem by blowing it out outside in the garden. Slightly inconvenient but better than a smoke filled room. All in all I was quite pleased with the product and it did eliminate odours. The next morning I noticed a rather pleasant subtle fragrance of vanilla round my house.

Would I recommend this product. Yes I would however I would only burn it for an hour or so as it does tend to overpower somewhat. Blow it out outside to eliminate the smoke-filled room syndrome. Remember to trim the wick prior to each use otherwise the flame is a bit wild. For more information on this product and others in the febreze range contact.
