Disadvantages: Quite overpowering itself

***The most common stenches***

Have you ever left a pub after a long night of partying and drinking, to find that your favorite coat just reeked of cigarette smoke and pub food? Have you ever sat on an over-crowded train on a summer day during rush hour and felt your sweaty armpits soaking your expensive suit jacket more and more by the second? Have you ever been out for a curry and felt your entire wardrobe had become a dish of chicken tikki masala? And have you ever been to the gym and found yourself unable to get rid off the smell of sweat from your gym clothes, even after several washes? Then Febreze may be the answer for you!

I've been on a quest to find a good way to remove odours from clothing. Partially I want to be prepared to have a 'smell buster' in the house when I start working and when I will be wearing a suit on a daily basis that will be liable to attract one or all of the above stenches some time during my career. Partially I wanted an item that would help me get rid of the sweaty smell that seems to have permanently moved into the fabric of my gym clothes.

I tried a number of things. I washed my gym clothes at higher temperatures, but this did not help one bit. I tried putting perfume on the clothes, but I found that the smell would be so overpowering and nauseating that I wanted to drop off the crosstrainer like a dead fly.

So on my last trip to Sainsbury's, I picked up a bottle of Febreze.

***The product***

Febreze is a fabric refresher that claims to eliminate odours and freshen clothes. It comes in various different smells and for different uses, such as:

Febreze Original
Febreze Allergen Reducer
Febreze Spring & Renewal
Febreze Meadows & Rain
Febreze Antimicrobial
Febreze Auto
Febreze Blossoms & Breeze

The product is not to be used on leather, suede or silk.

I picked up a 500 ml bottle of Meadows & Rain to test on my clothes.

***My experience***

As instructed, I sprayed the product on my woolen work-out shirt until it was slightly damp. It was at this stage that I realised the drying process would take a while and that I would have to pick out another shirt for this evening's work-out, because when I checked on the shirt 30 minutes later, it was still damp. I took s sniff at the fabric to see the initial result and was very disappointed. It did not seem to make a difference at all, there was still a sweaty odour hanging in the microfibres of my T-shirt.

When I picked up the T-shirt the next day and took a careful smell, I was plesantly surprised! No longer did the sweaty smell from my previous work-out linger. Instead I smelled Febreze itself - a slightly sweet but fresh smell.

To test out the results I wore the shirt for my workout. In the past I had felt very self-conscious about the lingering odour when working out next to other people. This time, however, I did not. When I started moving there was no disgusting sweaty smell entering my nostrils, just a wiff of Febreze here and there.

I did find that the Febreze smell itself could be a bit overpowering during the workout itself. When I am exercising, I generally do not like any smells coming anywhere near my nose, be it moisturizer, perfume or, in fact, Febreze. Working out seems to just intensify the smell of any product that people put on.

The great thing was that once I washed my shirt the next time after my workout, the sweat washed out completly. So Febreze seemed to have a longer-lasting effect after just one use.

***The verdict***

This product is easy to use and definitely does eliminate bad odours. I will keep using it. A couple of annoyances do exist with this product, for one the overpowering smell. I might try a few others from this line.

Another annoyance is having to effectively dry your clothes twice if you follow the instructions to the letter. Once after you wash them and once after you 'febreze' them. I am now resorting to putting the product onto my clothes right after they come out of the machine. It seems to work for woolen items. I am not sure what it would do to other items.
