Glade Spiced Apple Candle
Advantages: Lovely scent. Lasts up to 30 hours.
Disadvantages: None for me.
Like many Dooyooers, I am a bit of a sucker for a scented candle, and have particular problems when I visit a store that has a scented candle section, as I can't walk past without sniffing them! My favourite brand has to be Yankee, for the sheer variety of scents, but I also enjoy other brands, and was very lucky to notice that the Glade candles are on offer in most supermarkets for £1.50 instead of the usual £3 at the moment. I bought two candles, the spiced apple and the enchanted night, as I had read good reviews on both here on Dooyoo. I have not tried the enchanted night candle yet, but have had the spiced apple one for a few weeks, so feel ready and qualified to review it now.
The glade candles come protected in a cube made of thin card, which has the corner cut away so that you can see the candle inside. The cut away is big enough for you to see the actual candle, and have a sniff, as well as being able to get a good look at the pattern on the glass receptacle that the candle comes in. This is a really good way to help you decide which particular candle is right for you, as you may choose one that matches your decor, or choose it purely for the scent. The card box is recycleable.
The spiced apple candle comes in a glass bowl that is very festive looking. The top of the bowl is a red colur, which fades to pink through to white at the base of the bowl. This is overlaid with a deep red holly pattern, which is accented with gold dots and swirls. This is slightly different from the picture above, which i presume may have been the previous year's design. The pattern is actually on a very thin plastic sheet which is wrapped tightly around the bowl, so if, for any reason, you didn't like the pattern, you could carefully cut the plastic away to reveal a plain transparent bowl, which would, of course, reveal the candle within. When the candle is finished, I sometimes keep the glass bowl and put a small yankee votive inside, or of course, the bowl is easily recycled with household waste.
The candle is a deep red colour and fills the bowl, rather than being loose in the bowl. The product weights 120g, and this equates to a candle that burns for up to 30 hours, so when you consider the £1.50 I paid for this, it is extremely good value.
The wick is in the centre of the candle and is easy to light when you first use the candle. As the candle goes down, it gets a bit more tricky, but I find that the best way to light it is to tilt the bowl slightly, and light the wick side-on, rather than from above. As the candle burns down, it creates a little pool of molten wax, and when you blow it out, you get a sunken area where the candle has been burning. This isn't really a problem though, as these candles do burn down evenly, unlike others that I have tried, and I have never ended up with just a lump of wax with no wick. They do burn evenly and efficiently.
Now for the main part. The fragrance. In my view, you get a more powerful perfume with a Glade candle than a Yankee or other branded candle. This candle really fills the room and actually spills out to fill the whole downstairs of our house with a lovely apple cinnamon scent. The fragrance is delicious, and it is a very warm and inviting scent that reminds you of apple pie, or warm, mulled drinks by the fireside. Everyone in our family loves the scent of this candle. It does make you hungry though! For the bst effect, you should burn the candle for one or two hours, to really fill the room with lasting fragrance.
I have had the candle a few weeks, and burn it two or three times a week. It has still got loads of wax left and is sure to last me into the new year. I find it is great when I want to freshen up the room, particularly if I have guests coming, and it is also great at banishing nasty smells. A big problem I have at the moment is that every time I hoover, my vacuum emits a burning rubber smell, which fills the room! The candle is great at covering up this nasty smell. On these dark winter nights, I also like to burn the candle to create a nice ambience, as it looks really homely, twinkling away on the mantelpiece.
The box does contain a few warnings. It is a candle after all, so many of these are to do with fire risk, but there is also a warning about potential allergy. I suffer with asthma and rhinitis, but have never had any breathing problems using thse candles. Some of the warnings on the box are in picture form, and I can't work out what they are supposed to mean. They are pretty cryptic to me, and I am usually quite good with puzzles. For example, there is one weird picture of a dog barking at a candle with a line through it. I presume this means to keep the candle away from pets, but it is not entirely clear! Another picture has a book with lots of wiggly lines on it and it is crossed out. Haven't got a clue what that one means. Honestly, you could make a family game from these weird pictures on the bottom of the box!
Cryptic warnings aside, I absolutely love the candle. At this time of year it really looks lovely and the scent is so yummy. I will definitely buy this product again, even if it is full price, and it gets a well desrved 5 stars from me.
Summary: A long lasting candle that burns evenly.
