I finally got round to washing my net curtains! I know you’ll all be pleased to know this fact and will sleep easier in your beds because of it.

As you may have guessed from my opening remarks this is not a job I do very often, but when I do I use a product called Glo White Net Curtain Whitener.

Glo White is one of a range of products of this type made by Acdo and comes in a packet of three 57ml sachets, each suitable for one batch of six medium sized curtains. I can’t remember how much I paid for these but I think it was about £3 for the packet.

The directions on the packet advise you to fold the curtains and place in a bowl of warm soapy water for five minutes, rinse and then, keeping folded, place in a bowl containing no more than four pints of water in which a sachet of Glo White has been dissolved. You should soak them for about five minutes and then remove them from the water and allow them to drip dry, out of doors if possible.

My automatic washing machine has a rinse hold feature so the way I wash my nets is by putting them in the washing machine on a warm wash, setting the rinse hold feature and filling the fabric conditioner drawer with the net curtain whitener. I then leave the curtains soaking in the final rinse with the whitener for at least five minutes before pressing the button to start the final spin.

I know that this doesn’t keep them folded as advised on the packet but I iron them as soon as they come out of the washing machine and put them back up at the windows even though they are still very slightly damp. The warmth of the room, and sometimes even the sunshine through the windows if I’m really lucky, helps to finish drying them and the remaining creases fall out.

The Glo White not only gets the curtains crisp and clean but also helps to stop the build up of grime and dust on the curtains.

I have always used Glo White when washing my net curtains and have al
ways been pleased with the results.

I still don’t get round to doing it very often though!

When I moved house a couple of years ago, I'm glad to say that I ditched the dreaded nets. Admittedly, where I was before, in a terraced house with a front room window facing right out onto the pavement they were a necessity, but thankfully now they're gone forever.

Very useful information for people that need them though - there's nothing worse than grubby nets!
