Advantages: Does the job

Disadvantages: Only for the toilet

When my family lived in our previous home we would regularly find that our sinks and toilet had quite a severe lime scale build up, made worse by some strange orange tint that a standard bleach or cheep toilet cleaner could not shift, it seemed no matter how hard we scrubbed we could not get rid of the scale and so it was that we found ourselves splashing out on Harpic lime scale remover instead of our usually cheaper Asda brand.

Harpic 100% Lime scale remover-
Harpic 100% lime scale remover is designed to not only fight lime scale but to also clean and disinfect your toilet, it's claims to kill 999% of all germs. It has a unique ingredient which aims to prevent the toilet bowl from staining and claims to be active, protecting against scale for up to as many as 150 flushes.

Coming in the now widely used "toilet duck" shaped bottle Harpic 100% lime scale remover is a thick blue liquid which is meant to be applied along the inside rim of the bowl and allowed to gradually disperse covering the entire inside of the bowl. The original version is classic in it's "toilet cleaner" style smell, one that is difficult to describe as there's no attempts to make it pleasant or floral but none the less is recognisable for it's potent chemical smell.

Price & availability-
The Harpic 100% lime scale remover is available in 750ml bottles and in two "fragrances" original and fresh. It is available from most supermarkets and retails at £1.18 in Asda.

Our experience-
We bought the cleaner in a desperate attempt to deal with the scale build up we were experiencing after being let down by all manner of toilet fresheners and cleaning blocks. We applied the cleaner as directed and added an extra squirt for good measure, I was pleased to notice that although having that "original" smell it wasn't too overpowering and it was safe to say you'd leave the bathroom after using the stuff with all your nasal hair and eyebrows intact. After several hours we decided the time had come to test our new product and see what it may or may not have achieved, giving the toilet a flush we were amazed to see the weird orange build up had gone, in fact there seemed to be no remaining scale at all and we hadn't even needed to pick up the loo brush to tackle it. Naturally we couldn't believe our luck and thought it may have been a fluke but with regular use we managed to avoid any unpleasant scale build ups, it's just a shame we couldn't use it on our taps too.

It's reassuring to know that the product is designed to clean and disinfect as well as remove the lime scale, my little boy takes himself up to the toilet nowadays so it's good to know that he can get up to whatever toddlers do in the bathroom but wont pick up any nasty germs as a result of using the loo, it's also proved reassuring during these past 21 weeks of my pregnancy that I wasn't going to pick up anything horrible while cleaning the loo as all us poor homebodies have to do at some point each week. As for keeping a stain free bowl, well I guess it worked but then I don't make a habit of pouring dye down the loo to see if the bowl will stain, all I know is it kept it clean and fresh.

The cleaner cost a fair bit more then the stores own brand we previously used but it did it's job and removed the scale build up which, to me, makes it good value for money, we would get through a lot less bottles because less of it was needed for a good result.

Overall it's been a great success and definitely worth the money. Recommended!

Summary: A brilliant product that rid us of our scale problem

When we moved into our home, we found the orange stuff too, and took a lot of work to get rid of. We see it occasionally build up in the corners of the shower, but doesn't take much to scrub away. The orange must be something to do with the hardness/softness of the water. Not nice anyway. Great review. Nicola x

Shall be giving this a try as other limescale removers that I have tried haven't been that effective!
