Advantages: Removes 100% of limescale

Disadvantages: Removes 100% of rubber, skin and chrome as well

I was in Spring Cleaning mode this weekend, and decided to give the flat a thorough going over rather than just the normal quick "flick over with a duster".

I'd used Tesco's limescale remover before and found it to be really good for the 89p it costs. However, I couldn't get any this weekend, so I settled for some Harpic 100% limescale remover instead. I was a bit miffed at the price (£1.39), but the bottle did have 50% extra free, so it was more of a bargain than it first looked.

I got the bottle home, and immediately set about cleaning the toilet and bath, both of which get horrendously lime-scaled. The first thing I noticed was the really strong and "toxic" smell. Then my hands began to burn. I plunged both hands in a bowl of cold water and reached for the rubber gloves. Silly me, it did say "Irritant" on the back of the bottle, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite as bad as it was.

Still, the Harpic did a wonderful job on the toilet, so I started on the bath and shower screen. Again, it cut through the limescale in next to no time, but it also cut through the chrome on my taps and bath handles. After the problem with the burning hands, I'd made sure that I'd read the back of the bottle thouroughly. It said that it wasn't suitable for stainless steel, but I didn't worry as I have no stainless steel in my bathroom. It didn't say that it wasn't suitable for chrome or silver plated objects.

I raced to get the shower on and wash this evil green slime off everywhere. But I was too late, my chrome taps and handles are now striped with black and the finger ends on my rubber gloves have been melted away.

In my opinion this stuff is absolutely lethal. I don't know how it has managed to get through safety tests and onto supermarket shelves. Yes, it is wonderful at ridding our bathrooms of limescale, but the warnings on the bottle just don
't go anywhere near describing just how dangerous Harpic Limescale remover is.

I will never be buying this again. Tesco's own stuff may not be as good, but I'd rather buy that and spend 10 minutes scrubbing, than have my fingers burned and bath ruined again.

Excellent product, & with 3 bowls to keep clean in a hard water area I should know. This product is highly acidic, because it is somewhat viscous you can leave it on to work whilst you are going about other things. It is far too strong for showers & bath tubs where household vinegar or citric acid crystals will do the job. A further warning KEEP AWAY FROM BLEACH or you'll gas yourself with chlorine.
