Advantages: Harpic, good value.

Disadvantages: Messy.

I always use a toilet block, of one sort or another, as well as cleaning my loo the traditional way. I find that these blocks usually offer a welcome fragrance but I am never sure how much actual cleaning they offer.

The problem with many of these products is also that they are a bit messy to change. In recent years most have had replacement blocks provided which means opening the now mucky cage which holds it. Years ago toilet blocks where bought for single use and disposed of entirely afterwards. There are a few that are still like this but not many in the trusted brand ones.

Harpic is a brand I trust for numerous toilet cleaning products. The latest addition to their toilet block range is the Harpic Hygienic Cageless block. I have seen this advertised but only recently found it on sale. Perhaps this means that it has not been a good seller.

I have not used it long enough to make a 100% decision on its value but here's what I think up to now.

I bought a pack of two Harpic Hygienic blocks in a lavender fragrance. The manufacturer claims that this product cleans as well as fragrancing the loo and lasts up to 4 weeks. Mine has been in operation a couple of weeks and has only halved in size so their time estimation looks about right. There was only one other fragrance on sale at Wilko when I bought this one.

The toilet block is a hard one which has the toilet rim hook attached directly on to it. In theory this means that, when the block is all used up, you will just be left with just a hook to remove. No messy cage to empty and refill. However if this bothers you so much I would think that you would not refill but just buy a new one each time.

The fragrance is ok assuming you like lavender. It is not overly strong but it is evident. On the downside I have found that where the block sits on the rim there is quite a lot of soapy looking debris. As to the cleaning effects on the bowl I would say these are minimal and the loo still needs regular cleaning.

As these products go it was alright as it was on offer. I may buy Harpic Hygienic again but I tend to swap about with offers available from reputable brands.

Harpic Hygienic has ingredients which can be harmful to children, skin and your eyes. As such I would think it would be safer in a cage but who am I to make such assumptions.

Overall an ok product but nothing to write home about and certainly not as unique as the manufacturer would have us believe.
