r>While my parents are away on their travels for a year, my husband and I during a moment of complete madness offered to take on their house for them. To enable us to do this we are renting our one out. As a goodwill gesture Barry and I decided to take it upon ourselves to redecorate their house to help out. We had an ulterior motive though, dad is a smoker and as soon as you walk into their house the smell of nicotine slaps you in the face and the woodwork is a nasty shade of yellow.

After a lick of paint the smell of nicotine was a lot less noticeable, but the smell of paint was still lingering. With a Halloween party planned a couple of weeks later, I didn?t want the smell still wafting through the house so I decided to fill the house with room fragrances to make it more welcoming.

I only had 2 in the cupboard so when I went on my next shopping trip I came home armed with more ammunition to help remove those nasty niffs.

Tesco were doing a BOGOF promotion on Air Wick Air Crystal so I decided to throw a few into my trolley. Although the price was the most important factor in my purchase decision, I also liked the look of these air freshners. The ones I normally buy are of the white plastic variety that looks unsightly if on display, and I?m not too keen on the plug-in versions as my son is now at the age where he likes to remove plugs from sockets. The air crystals are something completely different as they are made of glass and have a coloured gel on one side that releases a nice fragrance around your home.

The gel has another purpose as well. Because it is coloured this gives an indication when the air crystal needs replacing. As time passes, the gel gradually shrinks letting you know how long before it runs out. The Air Crystals claim to last 4 weeks, but I have had mine for just over 2 now and there is no sign yet of it getting close to running out.

You can find the Air Wick Air Crystals alongside all the other ro
om fragrances and air fresheners. They are packaged in a small cardboard wrapper and the Air Crystal protrudes out so a cutout circle enabling you to see what you are buying.

The outer wrapping is decorated according to what fragrance you have chosen to purchase. In my case I have bought one of two limited edition fragrances introduced especially for the festive season. The mulled Wine I have gone for has a Christmas theme on the front using a festive garland going down one side and a pile of cinnamon sticks on the other. The Air Wick Logo takes centre stage above the actual air crystal.

The aroma of the Mulled Wine air crystal really gives a Christmassy feel to your home. Most of the scents you would associate with Christmas can be picked out ? cloves, cinnamon and ginger but no turkey!

The other Christmas fragrance is Snowy Cedars. This is a light green coloured gel that has a light floral scent with a hint of eucalyptus. Both of the limited edition scents have a star shape pattern on the glass. All the others have a wavy design.

Other fragrances available are:

Aquamarine, which is a blue gel with a fresh smell, which conjures up images of waterfalls. This one would go well in the bathroom.

Berries and Spice is a vivid red gel, similar to the mulled wine version. This has a fruity smell with a subtle hint of spice. This smell is very welcoming so would go well in the hallway.

Lavender as you would imagine has a purple gel, which gives off a relaxing aroma. This would be ideal for the bedroom to give a tranquil feeling.

Peach Blush is an orange gel that smells gorgeous with the strong, but not overpowering scent of peach.

And finally White Flowers, which has a nice subtle floral aroma.

As the Air Crystals come in different colours and fragrances, you can choose the ones that compliment your decor.

When removing the Air Crystal from the box there is a sticky protec
tive wrapper on the glass, which you need to peel off before use.

Because these are made from glass it is wise to keep out of the reach of children in case they are dropped. Also because the gel is not concealed it is possible for young children to get to it and they may try and eat it. Again keep in a high position and this will be avoided.

If however your child does swallow any it is advised that you seek medical attention right away and if possible take the package with you so that the doctors can see the ingredients.

The Air crystal must not be placed on a varnished surface as it could get marked, and it should not be exposed to the sun, or any other heat source.

As I mentioned earlier I bought my Air Crystals from Tesco and I paid £1.94 for each one, but they are widely available from other supermarkets and cost about the same price. If you have an eye for a bargain like me though, they can be found on special offer sometimes so it?s worth stocking up then.

Even after use these glass air fresheners would come in handy for making light catchers. Simply use different coloured stain-glass window paint and you have a cheap ornament to hang in front of your windows. Also you could make a mobile for your child?s bedroom using lots of finished air crystals all painted different colours. This is a great way of keeping kids entertained during a miserable rainy day, so obviously my daughter cannot wait till they?re finished.

There is a website you can visit where you can print off a 25p off voucher which you can use in any store selling Air Wick Air Crystals. Log onto www.airwick.com. You are required to fill in a short questionnaire and as soon as that?s done you?re ready to print off the coupon. Be quick though, they are only valid until the 17th of December.
