Advantages: Easy to use, very cheap, easy to clean.
Disadvantages: None it's brilliant.
This is one of my absolutely must have gadgets, it is probably one of the more simpler inventions designed for the kitchen but is definitely up there on my most used list.
What is it ?
It is a small hand held device, designed to core and cut apples into slices. It's handle and outer shell is made of a hard wearing plastic, the picture shows a red one but when I bought mine the only colour available was yellow so this may change depending on store or time of year.
The inside blade is made of stainless steel, it has a small circular middle this is what cores the apple. On the outside of the circle there are eight triangular segments, these slice the apple.
How does it work ?
It is very easy to use the slicer, no buttons, plugs or any other fancy bits just a simple piece of kit for your kitchen.
You place the slicer/corer on top of your apple, you can use any size and variety even the little baby childrens apples. Then you simply push down, you do need to use a bit of brute force so it is probably not the best piece of equipment if you have limited strength or grip.
I should point out that this is very sharp, so it should be used with a chopping board or it will damage your worktops.
That's it you are left with eight slices of apple and the core which can be disposed of.
Who is it good for ?
The slicer is good for any apple loving family, I use it all the time for my children as they never seem to eat a whole apple, but when I slice it up for them it is eaten in a flash.
I also use it when I am making pies and flans as the slices are even and look much more attractive than if I just used a knife.
It is also good for making slices to dip into yoghurt or chocolate as they are a nice hand held size.
How much is it and where can I buy it ?
The Ikea charm apple slicer is exclusive to Ikea stores, it costs £1.79p which is a fantastic bargain and well worth the money.
This is such a simple idea that really makes my life easier, no mess, no fuss and no half eaten apples anymore. Well done Ikea !!!!
Summary: fantastic way to help you get your five a day.
