Advantages: keeps toilets smelling fresh and clean, prevents limescale

Disadvantages: block needs to be unsettled every week to work effectively

I like to pride myself on the cleanliness of my home, however having an all white bathroom suite, I am conscious of my bathroom smelling as clean as it looks. No one wants a smelly toilet, so I decided to buy Jeyes Bloo instead of my usual routine of pouring disinfectant in the cistern.

I bought Bloo Acticlean from my local Morrison’s store for £1.58 and opted for Bloo instead of Tesco’s own label version as Jeyes has a good reputation. I opted for Bloo Acticlean Citrus over the version which is Blue in colour as I tend to prefer toilet blocks which don’t turn the toilet water blue or green.

Bloo is part of the Jeyes Group which was founded in 1877 and their counterpart Bloo have provided toilet cleaners for over 30 years. They were the first to invent the in-cistern block and there are a number of products in the Bloo range including: Bloo Liquid Toilet Cleaner, Bloo Power Core, Bloo Max, Bloo Solid Rim, Bloo Liquid Rim, Bloo n’ Bleach to name a few.

Bloo Acticlean is a cistern toilet block and is fairly new to the range. The blocks now contain bicarb (the same stuff my mum puts in Veg to keep it green!) for cleaner results in your toilet and with every flush you get a subtle fresh fragrance of citrus. This causes a rich foam which when released cuts through dirt and prevents limescale leaving my toilet sparkling clean.

The packaging stands out on the shelf as it is bright yellow. For £1.58 you get two 50g toilet blocks and based on just two of us in our house each block has lasted for 4-5 weeks. Obviously if you have a much bigger household you will expect the block to have dissolved within 3 weeks, depending on how much the toilet is flushed.

The block itself is light yellow in colour and has swirls of green in the block. Each block has a clear pleated wrapper which has a slight greasy feel to it, however not greasy enough so that it flies across the bathroom when you take it out of the packaging. The block is fairly solid and it’s not going to crumble if you drop it on the floor, however it’s edges are soft. The wrapper slowly dissolves in your cistern, doesn’t leave any residue and each time you flush the toilet it releases a small amount of the block which leaves a pleasant citrus smell and rich foam in your toilet.

Directions for use:

1. Clean the toilet thoroughly, including under the rim.
2. Flush the toilet and remove the block from the pack.
3. Do not remove the pleated wrapper as this will dissolve in the water.
4. Drop the block into the cistern by the float, at the opposite end of the water inlet.
5. Allow 5 minutes for the block to settle before flushing.
6. When foaming and fragrancing stops replace with another block.

My only gripe about the toilet block is that after one week of putting the block in the cistern I noticed that the block was no longer foaming. I had initially thought that it had already dissolved, but all it needed was for me to give it a little nudge to unsettle it and it started to fragrance and foam straight away. I had to do this each week to make sure that the block was working effectively. When the toilet is flushed there is a layer of foam and I noticed that this only tends to last for around 5 minutes and then the bubbles disperse.

One good thing is the smell. I always associate bleach as being a clean smell, however it does stink the house out. Bloo Acticlean has a pleasant citrus smell that is not overpowering. It has a very subtle bleach smell and you don’t need to almost stick your head down the toilet to realise that the block is working effectively.

Overall, I think that Bloo Acticlean is great value for money as £1.58 is cheap and occasionally every few months or so there will be an offer where you can get 3 toilet blocks for the price for two. You may have to give the block a little nudge every so often to unsettle it in the cistern, but apart from this it has a very pleasant smell, leaves the toilet clean without leaving any residue and prevents limescale.

As with all cleaning materials Jeyes Bloo Acticlean is an irritant to eyes and skin so best to avoid contact with these areas, as per usual, in case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water, if swallowed seek medical advice and lastly it contains citronellol and geraniol which may cause an allergic reaction.
