Advantages: Helps the fight against limescale and germs
Disadvantages: Nothing major
Jeyes Bloo solid rim - a plain and simple everyday way of counteracting lime scale and keeping the toilet bowl fresh and clean.
The Jeyes solid rim cleaners are available in three fragrances, Fresh Citrus, Fresh Pine or Fresh Aqua. When it came down to choosing a fragrance that suited me I had no problems, I am not a fan of the pine smell and Fresh Aqua didn't seem the most innovative of names to choose, so I picked up a Fresh Citrus solid rim cleaner.
Lemon always smells fresh and clean, maybe with all of the more exotic fragrances that are on offer today it could even be deemed as rather plain.
The solid rim blocks have been in production for years, they are a good straightforward toilet cleaning product.
The solid block of lemon scented cleaner is held inside of a white plastic case that has a couple of slits cut out of the case on each side to allow the water to flow over the scented block each and every time that you flush the loo. Then a long and shapely plastic handle has been attached to that casing which allows you to hang the cleaner over the side of the toilet bowl and let it slide and sit snugly just underneath the rim.
So, once the Jeyes Bloo solid rim is in place then each time that you flush the toilet the water flows over the cleaner and a small amount of cleaner makes its way down into the toilet bowl.
The block has a strong citrus smell when you are hanging it over the edge of the toilet for the first time but once the unit is in place under the toilet rim that smell fades fairly quickly.
Of course the more you flush the toilet the quicker the block wears away, I usually find that I can get a couple of weeks out of one block but there are only the two of us, I think a family may find that they would get through a block far more quickly.
I do have one small beef with them though, if you don't watch out the long arched handle that fits over the edge of the toilet bowl slips and you find that the gadget is either on the floor or sitting in the bottom of the toilet bowl just wasting away in the water.
I think the trick is to pull the handle out as far as it will stretch and then secure it as firmly as you can.
If you expect to see loads of foam and bubbles as you flush then you are going to be disappointed, the water looks does pick up a slight amount of froth along the way but that soon vanishes. You can just smell the citrus but if you want any real fragrance then you will have to buy a Glade Touch and Fresh to use alongside it !
I use the Jeyes solid rim blocks because they do keep the toilet bowl relatively germ-free but that doesn't mean to say that I ignore the need to give the bowl a good going over.
The toilet bowl is still on the end of a good scrubbing session a couple of times a week and I still leave a toilet cleaner in the bottom of the bowl overnight to make sure that the china stays white.
The solid rim block does help to prevent lime scale build up, if I fail to renew the block then it doesn't take long for scale to start rebuilding.
You can buy refills ( 88p for a pack of 2 ) which means that the same case can be reused time and time again and the product is not dear to begin with. I pay somewhere around the 90p mark for mine.
Most leading supermarkets and hardware stores stock the Jeyes products.
That interesting little white plastic box that hangs over the side of the toilet is not anything that we could consider as fascinating but if I had small children running in and out of the bathroom then I may well avoid using any solid rim block, I am sure that the contents must be toxic.
Jeyes have many other cleaners on the market including cistern blocks and the latest Bloo fusions, a gel cleaner.
Jeyes also state that the cleaners are fine to use if you have a septic tank and they are perfectly safe to use in conjunction with other cleaners.
I like the rim blocks, they are quick and easy to use and they help to keep the toilet smelling and feeling fresh and clean.
Summary: A capable product from Jeyes
