Advantages: Cleans anything
Disadvantages: Cost - buy the equally good brandless ones for 89p instead
Even if you've never thought about cleaning in your life, buy one of these and you'll be excited - magic is exactly what it is!
I first heard about Magic Erasers on a domestic forum where people were going crazy about them, and to be honest I didn't understand the fuss. Then one day I saw them in the pound shop and decided to try them out.
Magic Erasers are smallish white sponges - you get 2 in a pack usually. They don't look exciting in the least (what cleaning products do?), and I didn't use them until a few months later when the kitchen floor was filthy and the flash mop just wasn't shifting the dirt. I decided to get down on my hands and knees with the Magic Eraser and tested it on a random floor tile. It came up absolutely sparkling white - I'd never known my floor was that colour, or had those subtle marbled patterns in it!!
Since then I've tried it on everything. Scuff marks on the wall - gone (be careful if you have painted walls though as a little paint can come off). Dried stain paint on the sink? Came off easily. Paint on the taps? No problem. And so on. I've even used it to get blood off fabric.
My housemate was amazed when we were painting the bathroom over the summer because I wasn't bothered at all about paint getting on the bath, floor tiles, mirror, sink and taps. I was even confident enough to let it dry and then showed her the magical powers of the Magic Eraser. At which point she was amazed that anything could clean that well (and she's a chemistry student). If you want to find out more about the scientific properties, just wikipedia 'magic eraser'.
It's odourless, doesn't sting or hurt, and is really easy to use. All you do is run it under hot water and then squeeze it out - then wipe over things as normal. It literally just looks just like a normal white sponge.
The only disadvantage is that you can use them up very quickly as they aren't the best shape in the world - thinner would be better I think.
The JML ones are quite expensive at £4 a time. However, I've found that there is no difference between them and the cardboard sleeved brand name less Magic Erasers which can be found in several pound shops or at Wilkinson's at the even lower price of 89p. They are completely worth it though - I tend to buy a few packs at once and keep them under the sink.
Summary: You might think I'm mad - but try them and get excited too!!

- 14/02/09 This sounds very much like the Flash eraser. It was a godsend when it came to removing crayon from the walls. It's no longer available anywhere so I'm pleased to see this. |
