      Brilliant tablecloth

We moved house a few months back now and needed to buy some new furniture and other odds and ends. I bought a nice table and chair set and decided to buy a few new tablecloths too. I found some designs that I really liked but had real trouble finding a white one, that was until I had a look on Amazon and this JML Magic Tablecloth caught my eye. I must say I was quite intrigued by this tablecloth which promised to be spill and stain resistant, it had good reviews plus it was white so I decided to give it a go.

A few days later a standard Amazon brown box appeared on my doorstep. The tablecloth itself was presented in a plastic cover with a plastic hanger at the top. The cardboard insert showed the brand name JML along with the product name "Magic Tablecloth". There was also an example  picture of how the the tablecloth looks when displayed on a table.

JML claim that this tablecloth is spill and stain resistant and "works like magic". The tablecloth has been embedded with a special agent which they call Spill Guard (tm) which repels liquid causing it to bead on the tablecloth, stains therfore cannot penetrate into the material. JML claim if anything is spilled on the tablecloth you simply need to "soak with an absorbant cloth and the mess will disappear". Pictures on the back of the packaging show the results of a glass of red wine being spilled on a normal tablecloth compared to the magic tablecloth, the red wine on the normal tablecloth has absorbed and spread causing a terrible stain, whilst the wine on the magic tablecloth has beaded and sits unabsorbed. There is also a picture of a wine stain being soaked with a cloth and another to show the clean stain free tablecloth.

Care instructions are given which suggest 30 degree machine washing only. The tablecloth cannot be bleached, tumble dried or dried cleaned. It can be ironed but only on the warm setting. I was a little disappointed to learn that the tablecloth can only be washed up to ten times in a 30 degree wash before the SpillGuard no longer works.

When I opened up the packaging and took out the tablecloth I was struck by the feel of the material, the label states it is 100% polyester but it felt so soft to touch. Since it had been folded up in the packaging it did have a few creases so I gave it a quick iron before placing it on my dining table. It fits my four seater table well but I think it would fit larger tables fine as well. I was actually looking for a plain white tablecloth but this one has a square design on it but this isn't a real problem as I think it looks really nice anyways. It looks smart and tidy on the table.

My youngest daughter only needs to look at a drink for it to spill over, so it came as no surprise to me that she was the first to put the the SpillGuard technology to the test, in this instance with half a cup of blackcurrant juice. I was a bit disappointed to discover that the liquid did not quite bead as promised, it did however lift off quickly and simply with a sheet of Bounty kitchen roll leaving no stain, impressive. Next was a gravy spill but sure enough it was easily cleaned up this time with a damp sponge with no trace left. After about a month of using the tablecloth my partner and I were enjoying a spicy takeaway curry and when I opened one of the containers some curry sauce leaked out all over the tablecloth, I tried wiping it with a damp cloth but it didn't do much to help and we were left with a rather large dark orange stain. To be honest I figured the tablecloth was done for as curry stains are notoriously difficult to get rid of but I put it through a 30 degree wash anyways. To my surprised when the tablecloth came out of the wash it was stain free and bright white.

There have been various spills and stains on the tablecloth (again mostly my youngest with her drinks of juice!), usually a simple wipe is all it takes to clean it up but if not the washing machine does the trick. When the tablecloth is removed from the washing machine it is only slightly damp and doesn't take long at all to dry.  I have not yet surpassed the ten washes so at this point cannot comment on how well it performs after this. It rarely needs to be ironed as it usually comes out of the wash crease free. So far I have had no problems with the material, it hasn't snagged or become misshapen.

Initially I was sceptical about JML's claims regarding this tablecloth, but I have been pleasantly surprised with it. It is of a good quality, has a nice design and so far remained stainless. However, I would have liked the Spill Guard to last longer than ten washes.

JML guarantee this tablecloth against defects of workmanship and materials for one year.

The tablecloth I bought is white but it is also available in Ivory. It is 100% polyester and measures approximately 148 x 210 cm.
