I always hate defrosting my freezer which is probably one of the reasons I always leave it too long so everywhere is caked with thick ice and the drawers are impossible to open! One of the reasons for hating this job is that it just seems to take so long - a good four or five hours from beginning to end - and that's with using every device known to man to try and give the ice a helping hand along the way! Because of this you also have to be planning the operation well in advance so that you run down all your stocks so that they are not all ruined by defrosting while you wait!
Anyway, to digress slightly, the other week I was flicking idly through one of those Kleeneze catalogues that often find their way through our door. Usually I just put them straight outside ready to be collected, but for some reason, on this occasion I decided to take a look. I couldn't believe the array of wierd and wonderful cleaning products there were to be had, and after flicking through a few pages I was suddenly drawn to the Fridge/ Freezer De-Icer! Was this to be the answer to all my prayers? Something that was actually going to make the whole defrosting task less hateful?
The description in the catalogue claimed that this de-icer was a fast and easy way to de-ice your freezer. Well, if that was true then I was going to be first in line ordering one. So at this point I noted that one of these sprays would set me back £4 but if I really wanted to splash out and get two this would save me £2 and I would get the two sprays for £6! Now normally I am a real sucker for any BOGOF type offers but this time I was a little cautious - I didn't know how well it was going to work, and I didn't know how long one spray can would last! Therefore I ordered just one setting me back the princely sum of £4!
Now, with Kleeneze products, you leave your order and your catalogue outside your door ready for your Kleeneze rep to collect - and then in a few days they deliver your products which is when you pay your money! So a few days later a very nice lady delivered my de icer and I was ready to go!
So early one morning I removed the food from my freezer (I had run stocks down a bit), shook my can and sprayed well! I wasn't sure how much I would need to spray so was a little cautious at first but then liberally sprayed on a lot more. I don't know whether I was expecting a magical disappearing act but I was a little disappointed to start with because nothing seemed to be happening. Mind you there was a lot of caked on ice. So, as instructed on the can, I sprayed directly on the affected areas and allowed to penetrate the ice. You then have to repeat until the desired reduction of ice is achieved.
Although there was no instant removal, I became aware very soon that this spray was indeed having a very good effect. The ice was starting to malt and falling off in chunks. After about an hour there really was starting to be very good results. I was having to remove a lot of falling and melted ice! In fact the job was so good that I would say that my freezer was pretty much fully defrosted within two hours - and of course there was a very severe build up of ice in the beginning. I suspect that if I start to defrost on a more regular basis and use this spray, the job would probably be done within an hour!
The other thing to say is that I did use the whole can (200ml) on this one job. (Oh how I wish I had taken advantage of the offer!) However, I'm sure with more regular defrosting you wouldn't have to use so much.
Interestingly, no where on the container does it state what the spray actually is and what it consists of! There are the usual warnings though about using pressurised containers, not spraying in the face and keeping out of reach of all children! It is also highly flammable!
So overall I am really glad I discovered this product because it does seem to make light work of a tedious chore. Also at £4 it does seem a fairly reasonable price, especially if through regular use you can use it on more than one defrosting.
So the message here is that if a Kleeneze catalogue drops through your door - ignore it at your peril! You just might find something useful - I certainly did!
