“ Brand: Marks & Spencer / Type: Candles / Category: Home Fragrance „
The home department in Marks and Spencers is one of my favourite to wander round just to look at all the lovely things I could have in my home. Marks and Spencers always do a nice range of candles for the home and its here that I found these lovely vanilla candles. I love the smell of vanilla and often have body lotions with vanilla in as I love the fragrant, relaxing smell and find it quite a sensuous smell.
I bought these candles for use in my bedroom as I think the smell of vanilla from a candle is really relaxing. I see my bedroom as something of a sanctuary and once the kids are in bed I like to relax in here, light some candles, read a book and have some time to myself. These candles are perfect for that as they are quite basic looking but nice and decorative and you can light them in their own little glass container that they come in.
The candles come in nice brown glass containers and have a sort of frosted effect to them. I really like the colour of the brown as its quite muted and simple but looks really nice in my bedroom as I have a mixture of creams, tuapes and browns in there and so these match perfectly. The glass if fairly thick which I like because if you do accidently knock them or drop them which I have done a few times they will not break. The candle and glass is about the size of a big shot glass, that nice sampler size which is great for dotting around a room and having lots of little candles around.
The candle inside is white and they have a good wick on them as I have lit them and blown them out many many times now and they always light again when I need them too. The smell they give off is not amazingly strong but its nice and relaxing and is a very nice sweet vanilla smell.
Nice candles for the home.
There is nothiing about the appearance of the candle that stands out - either for good or for bad. The wax is a creamy white and the holder is a warm brown colour - and there is no decoration on the holder. The only reason I picked up the candles off of the shelf was because I was having a dinner party that evening and I needed some candles to set the scene.
It lights easily and with no issues. However, the burn time of this candle really isn't that long.......only about 6 hours - which in my opinion is pretty poor. The candle cost me £5 - for six hours burn time and hence 6 hours of a nice aroma.....and that's expensive compared to other candles that I own. However, it did burn evenly across the wax.
Whilst this candle smells "nice" in as much as its vanilla scented and hence fresh, I have to say that I find the smell a little subtle. I don't mind the fact that the smell isn't that strong because I actually don't like it when aroma's are over-powering, but the fact that the aroma doesn't last at all really is an issue for me. The second the candle is blown out, the aroma disappears - and that's not good enough. I don't like to leave any candle burning for a long period as I don't like the candle to be left alight when its not being attended - and so the benefit of burning this candle is a little limited if its benefits (i.e. the vanilla smell) disappear as soon as the candle is extinguished.
Overall, I certainly won't bother buying this candle again. Its not bad - its just that there are much better ones out there for the same price.
- Price -
This is currently £5. This will no doubt appear in the M&S outlet stores at a cheaper price which is so often the case.
- The candle -
~ Size & Appearance ~
The thick, brown glass container is 9cm tall and the candle itself begins at about 8cm.
~ How long does it last? ~
Unlike other candles I've bought, this one doesn't have any information as to how long it will burn / last for.
This one lasted for approx 10 hours over a few nights.
~ How easy is it to light and how does it burn? ~
It is initially very easy to light but I have to say that as the hours passed by it became incredibly difficult to light.
The problem was that the wax was only melting in a small circular shape around the wick which became deeper and deeper and since I don't have a special candle lighter or taper I began to burn my fingers with a lighter. If only dooyoo allowed me to add photos to the review you would see how it burns, thus making it difficult to light.
The way that this burns only at the centre means that there is quite a lot of waste.
~ The Smell ~
The wax does indeed have a vanilla scent to it but once the candle is lit, it doesn't emit a very strong smell at all. I like my scented candles to mask the smells that can sometimes develop in a room but this just doesn't do it for me. Great for anyone who wants a very, very slight smell but not enough to mask nasty smells!
- Marks and Spencer Scented Candles -
M&S have a range of scented candles for sale at the £5 mark and keep introducing new ones which I have to say make attractive looking gifts but worth looking out for in the sales or the outlet stores as they are a tad more expensive than other high street brands:
~ Daisy scented
~ Grapefruit and Ginger
~ Nectarine and Orange
~ Fresh Rose scented
- My Verdict -
It doesn't freshen the room and burns inefficiently. To sum up, it's over-priced and I have used much better, cheaper scented candles.
Thanks for reading.
