Advantages: Non toxic and does the job brilliantly!
Disadvantages: None
I was struck by two sentences I read on the Method website at www.method products.co.uk under the section they quirkily call "the humanifesto". They say "we see ingredients that come from plants, not chemical plants, and guinea pigs that are never used as guinea pigs". That was enough for me, as I bred guinea pigs for over 20 years and adore the little creatures, and having M E I am severely allergic to many household cleaning chemicals.
The other thing which really stands out on their website is the home page which says all you need to fight dirt is 20 seconds, warm water and good clean soap. This is 100% accurate as during my nursing training we did many experiments where we washed our hands with soap and water for various lengths of time, and then studied the germs left behind several days later, after we had left imprints of our hands on Petra dishes. The results were stunning, it was simply the length of time you washed for and the thorough nature of the wash which eliminated the germs, speed kills far more than any product choice you make to do the job.
So for these reasons I am gradually moving over to using ethical cleaning products, and Method has certainly got a vast range to choose from. All of them ensure that anything which they contain will not harm the environment, or you, and when disposed of leave rivers and the oceans free from pollutants.
I started my quest to use these products by selecting the all surface product which is called "French Lavender". This is a multi purpose surface cleaning spray which you can use in the kitchen, bathroom, and on all other things such as window sills and so on.
First bonus- no rubber gloves required as this is a non toxic product. Second bonus- it is cat friendly, this is vital to me as my Persians are prone to leaping onto my surfaces with monotonous regularity whilst I am trying to clean them, and some products such as disinfectants and bleach are potentially deadly to them. This goes for any product containing phenols, and especially mould cleaners too.
The bottle I purchased is a giant 828mls and retails for £3 from all major supermarkets.
A lovely lavender shade this spray bottle dispenses a liquid which smells absolutely beautiful. Not only that, it is brilliant in the kitchen. I was sceptical at first, especially regarding its potential as a cooker hob cleaner, but it cut through spills and splashes beautifully leaving no residue, and a fresh lavender fragrance.
I have used this all over the house with the same success, and it is really good in my bathrooms where it leaves sinks and baths sparklingly clean.
If you don't like lavender this product is also made in a pink grapefruit fragrance.
As it is non toxic it doesn't need to be rinsed off, and this further magnifies its ability to perfume the air.
The lavender product is made from coconuts, corn, and real French lavender, and as lavender is a relaxing fragrance it is pure pleasure to do the cleaning, which I can't say I have experienced before. You can be confident when disposing of the bottle that it will be fully recycled too, which is protecting the environment from any future contamination.
The way this product works is by absorbing dirt rather than by chemically altering it.
They don't claim to kill MRSA or flu viruses, or make any wild claims at all, but my knowledge tells me that attention to regular hand washing and general kitchen hygiene is much more important than the splashing around of toxic chemicals once in a while. The latter may even be causing superbugs to flourish as they become resistant to chemical warfare aimed at them.
So my kitchen sparkles, my cats are at peace. The future of the planet is protected, and the air is perfumed with French Lavender so no need for costly air fresheners.
It's a great product and I for one am buying this on a regular basis now.
Summary: A great cleaner which is ethical and does the job perfectly.

- 23/07/09 Excellent review, I must give this a try. I agree about too many anti-bacterial products being used. |
