Advantages: Easy to use, smells nice, really works

Disadvantages: Cost

A couple of years ago we had a brand spanking new kitchen fitted. It came with all the latest mod-cons, you know, a sink, taps, clever machines that could store and cook food as well as wash the dirty dishes afterwards and also a gloriously sleek and shiny stainless steel splashback behind the really technical Bosch hob. Oh, how proud I was. Just like a new mother I was. Until I realised splashbacks don't have that name for nothing. Indeed, they did seem to be at the back of a lot of my cooking splashes. Oh, how annoyed I was. Just like a mother with a crying baby.

The baby kept crying "clean me mummy". But, how on earth was I to keep it quiet when it seemed to need attention so often? I can't blame it for crying so much though. We get through an awful lot of chilli, spag bol, curry, fried eggs, rice, pasta and potatoes every week. Oh how desperate I was. Just like a mother with a hyperactive crying baby!

What on earth was I to do?
My best friend suggested a trip to John Lewis. (Where most people take valium, my best friend goes to John Lewis.) And it was on the suggested trip that I found a product in the homeware department called Method Stainless Steel cleaner and polish. I was feeling calmer now, like a mother who's just discovered dummies.

How much does it cost?
It's currently on sale at Waitrose for £4.35, or £4 direct from the method website. See http://www.methodproducts.co.uk/stainless_steel.ht ml for more info on this product and links to take you into a new dimension of cleaning.

The price seems expensive, I know, but in my view it's well worth paying. My bottle is still half full after a year, because you really don't need much of the product to do the job. With other cheaper cleaning products I tend to go through them a lot faster.

Obviously this is also a specialist product and I haven't seen anything that compares in the supermarket. The Ultimate40 Stainless Steel cleaner is £7.79; Franke Stainless cleaner cream is £9 and both these products are available on their internet sites.

Method's stainless cleaner is just as good on your stainless steel sink, taps and counters as it is on your splashback, which is great for all those of you who have minimal restaurant-style kitchens.

How do you recognise it?
Method's stainless cleaner comes in a very attractive recyclable silver coloured plastic bottle with a chunky translucent white spray gun nozzle. Wow, what a mouthful! It's a super sturdy container which is incredibly hardy, so don't worry about dropping it. This is one tough cookie!

The cleaner/polish is very natural, derived from corn and coconut. There are no harmful chemicals in the product and it has never been tested on animals. I feel like an eco-warrior mother!

Who makes the product?
Some very clever people, evidently, who really think about the ethical nature and sustainability of their products. I have also used their bathroom cleaner which is unlike anything I've ever encountered, smelling more like a facial cleanser than a bathroom cleaner.

"People against dirty" are the group behind the Method cleaning product company and they state on the back of their bottle:

"Stainless steel: it's a funny name. Would you want to try and stain it? What if you tried to stain it? OK, maybe you shouldn't try. The great thing about stainless steel is that it doesn't nick, rust,or corrode. But it does get dirty, and we're against that. method's non abrasive formula cleans and polishes stainless steel surfaces without streaking. Then just to be nice, it leaves a protective layer. And smells fresh. Because even steel has a sensitive side."

How do you use this product?

Well, I have to say, it is really easy to use. Here's how:

1.Shake the bottle.

2. Spray onto a clean cloth

3. Wipe onto the splashback with the grain of the steel.

4. Leave a few minutes and enjoy the fresh aroma.

5. Buff up with a clean dry cloth for extra shine.

6.Use your splashback as a mirror and revel in your cleaning prowess.

I am constantly amazed at how shiny the stainless is and visitors often ask how I manage to keep it looking so good. Until now, it's been a trade secret.

So, you'll be pleased to know the story ended happily. The baby never cried ever again about being dirty. It gurgled and cooed at the tender loving care it received from its now very proud mummy. Aaaaaah!

Summary: Your stainless will be shiny, shiny, shiny!

I have to say I like the ethos of the Method range. I've only tried the Tub Scrub so far but I'll be trying some more of the range soon x
