Yankee Candle Midsummers Night
Advantages: Long burn time
Disadvantages: Quite a masculine smell
My review is about the Midsummer Night sampler candle not the wax tart as shown in the picture
I am a fan of the Yankee products and have tried a lot of the different fragrances in the form of the wax tarts, however I do not just buy the wax tarts from Yankee and often buy the small sampler candle, these like the wax tarts are reasonably cheap and a good way to try out new fragrances. One particular sampler candle I purchased recently was the Midsummer's Night sampler. I'm not really sure what drew me to this one, however I decided to give it a go and see if it was as good as the other Yankee fragrances I had tried.
The Midsummer's Night sampler comes tightly wrapped in a clear plastic allowing you to see the colour of the candle inside. There is a small label stuck on the front of the candle, this has the words "Yankee Candle" written at the top and the fragrance of the candle "Midsummer's Night" written at the bottom in a gold rectangle. The rest of the label is taken up with a picture designed to reflect the fragrance of the candle, in this case the picture is of a nights sky with the tops of the trees, stars and a large moon. The only other information on the packaging is a small label stuck on the bottom of the candle, to be honest I cannot remember what this had on it as this was thrown away a while ago. The packaging is very simple and basic but it does tell you what you need to know.
A Yankee Sampler candle is basically a small version of the larger Yankee Candles but without the fancy jars, the samplers are designed to allow you to try out the different fragrances without spending a fortune on the larger candles. The Midsummer's Night Yankee Sampler Candle is a very dark blue colour designed to reflect the nights sky, the samplers measure just a couple of inches high and around an inch across, the top of the candle is very slightly wider than the bottom. I had in my mind that the Yankee Midsummer's Night Candle was going to have quite a strong fragrance to it and when I first tried it I was right. I had read about this fragrance before I purchased it and it was described as a masculine fragrance, however this didn't put me off, but I think I have to agree the fragrance does definitely have a masculine smell to it.
The fragrance is actually a blend of Musk, Patchouli, Sage and Mahogany Cologne, when I read this I had no idea what Mahogany Cologne was so didn't really know what I was expecting with this particular fragrance, however when I first smelt the candle I was definitely able to detect the Musk, this was in my opinion definitely the dominant fragrance with the others blended in in the background.
I hadn't had this candle lit long before the fragrance had spread throughout the whole of my lounge, as the fragrance was strong I found that it spread throughout most of the house which I find often happens living in an open plan house. I cannot really make up my mind whether this is a summers fragrance or not, sometimes I think it does have quite a fresh summery smell to it and other times I feel the strong Musk fragrance is more suited to a cold night in, however despite this I do quite like this fragrance even though it is quite masculine, I could imagine this is the sort of fragrance a man would have if he was into that sort of thing.
Although the Yankee Midsummer Nights Sampler candle is quite small you do get around 15 hours of burn time with them. As the samplers come without a jar you do need a heatproof plate or jar to place it on. I found that the candle was quite slow in melting which in my opinion is ideal as it meant that you are not just left with a dark blue puddle of wax. I have used my Midsummer's Night Yankee Sampler several time, no where near 15 hours, however the candle despite being small is proving to be long lasting and I would say I am well on track for the 15 hours. There are no real warnings that come with this product other than the usual you receive with candles which includes never leave candles unattended especially around pets and children.
I purchased my Yankee Midsummer's Night from a local gift shop that sells a lot of Yankee products and it cost £1.00, I feel that this is excellent value for money, it allowed me to try a new fragrance with a candle that has a long burn time without spending a fortune. You can buy Yankee candles in a variety of gift shops as well as online, on the Yankee website this same candle is available for £1.60 which is quite a bit more expensive that what I paid, however I would still be prepared to pay this as it is still a reasonable price. I would definitely say that the Yankee sampler is well worth the money I paid for it.
Overall I would definitely recommend the Yankee Midsummer's Night Sampler candle, it has a lovely fragrance which despite being quite strong is still pleasant, this may not be a fragrance for everyone as it is quite a masculine smell, personally I like the strong musky fragrance this candle has and would definitely consider purchasing this in the future.
The sampler candles are very reasonably priced so it is worth trying, even if you do not like the fragrance you have not wasted a lot of money. I wouldn't say this particular candle had an overly summery fragrance as expected however I did like it and would use it again, the strong fragrance makes it an ideal room freshener, especially if for you example you have been cooking something with a rather strong smell, by lighting the Midsummer's Night candle the strong fragrance will soon mask the cooking smells in you room. This is certainly a sampler candle I would recommend trying from Yankee.
Summary: Another nice candle from Yankee
