Advantages: easy to use, microfibers collect dust and dirt
Disadvantages: dusting mitt may be too small for some
'Minky' is a dusting dog. It is a combination between a dusting cloth and a hand size mitt. My purchase was a complete impulse buy, partly because I enjoy cleaning and being as it was the last 'Minky' on the shelf, I just had to buy it. I had never seen a 'dusting dog' before or heard of the 'Minky' brand and it seemed interesting. Also, it may sound weird but as dusters go it looks 'cute'.
I purchased my Dusting Dog from Tesco, it cost £2.00 and the cleaning cloth is surrounded by cardboard packaging with a picture of a dog on the front with scraggy hair. As expected it can be found on the 'cleaning materials' aisle.
This is the type of product you would expect to be sold by 'JML Direct' as it looks like a novelty household item. I had not heard of the brand before but 'Minky' appear to be quite a large company. 'Minky' are a British company based in Rochdale and they specialise in homecare. Products in their range include: cleaning products, mops, ironing boards and small household appliances.
So what exactly is a 'dusting dog'? The Minky dusting dog is a hand held dusting cloth and is Blue in colour. On the top of the duster there is an elastic strap which goes over your hand to keep the dusting dog in place (I suppose you could put it on your foot if you really wanted!). The underside, which is used for dusting, has long bobbly microfibers 'furs' which collects dust and dirt.
The dusting dog is ideal to use around the house, in particular to dust your TV, glass shelves, hard to reach places such as computer keyboards and great for scurtain boards. It can be used on any type of surfaces and doesn't scratch surfaces i.e. TV's, mirrors etc as the cloth is soft. It can also be used in the car to clean the dashboard and crevices.
The dusting dog is machine washable at 40 degrees or can be hand washed, but you mustn't wash it in fabric conditioner or any bleaches as it will affect the microfibers. I noticed that it was more effective at collecting dust once it has been washed first. I don't know why, but when it was new it seemed to just move the dust around, however after it was washed it picked up more dust. A plus point it that the dusting dog doesn't lint like traditional dusters and comes out of the wash as 'new'.
A disadvantage would be the size of the mitt. The mitt looked big sitting on the shelf but when you strap it to your hand it is quite small. It's so small that my fingers reach over the end of the mitt. Admittedly, it gives you good grip of the mitt, but I almost took off all of my nails, especially when cleaning in corners. I have small hands and the elastic is very tight. I think it would be quite uncomfortable for someone with large hands to use as they would probably have to curl their fingers when using or risk hurting their fingertips. Also, I'm sure that the elastic strap would cut off your blood supply for those with larger hands as it is very tight!
Is the 'Minky' worth £2.00? Yes it is. Ok, admittedly it is not an essential household item and can be seen as a novelty, but I do find it very useful and have surprised myself how many times I use it around the house. I rate the Minky Dusting Dog 4 stars; I won't give it 5 stars as it is not an essential household item and it has a few disadvantages in terms of it's size.
