Broomsticks

Its Halloween soon and all good witches will be getting their broomsticks ready in anticipation of a nights flying.

A witches broom is often called a besom which is the original name for a broom, as with a lot of words the spelling and pronunciation has changed over the years becoming broom.
Brooms have been in use for many year the caveman wanting to tidy his/her cave would have swept with a bundle of branches or natural grasses , slowly the besom/ round broom evolved to twigs straw or herbs bound to a stick. With the shakers in the 1800’s the round broom was developed even further to a flat broom. The flat broom meant you could sweep bigger areas as it is usually wider.

A Witches broomstick is her wand in disguise. She could carry her wand and it was obvious she was a witch, but if she carried a besom she looked just like an ordinary lady with a broom.
A Wiccan besom is traditionally made of an ash stick/handle and the bristles birch twigs.
Apparently a besom placed by the front door with the broom part pointing upwards will ward of evil spirits.

The word Besom can also mean little girl or a woman of low moral standing, a hussy.

At school we have some toy brooms for the children some are sweeping brushes some Besoms we have had these several years now and they do get played with. I think the besom we have is made by Brio, not sure if it’s still available as I can not find it on the internet. However I did find some besoms suitable size for children at http://www.oodlesoftoys.co.uk.they cost about 6 pounds.
A broom is a good toy we use ours at school the children enjoy sweeping the leaves up into a heap and then running through them. The children who have wheelchairs love been pushed through the heaps of leaves. I have also seen children playing with their broomsticks pretending to be witches, or Harry potter.
Harry Potter of course has made broomsticks popular with the game of Quidditch in the film. A fun game for 1 or two players can be found at http://www.surfnetkids.com/games/broomsticks/ it involves kids on broomsticks they have to get a ball into the hoop This game is based on Harry Potter Quidditch Game,
If your child likes colouring in there is a picture print out on line at http://www.apples4theteacher.com/coloring-pages /halloween/witch-on-broom-picture .
There is a Walt Disney film for children called bed knobs and broomsticks now 30 years old but still very watchable
I looked on line for sites that sell adult broomsticks and found a good selection at http://www.broomshop.com/cgi-bin /cart2/display.cgi?cat1=2 , and http://www.crocus.co.uk/?ContentType=Product_Card& amp;ClassID =2000005211&affiliate=td has a good one for about £12.

So I hope you like the few details I have given you about broomsticks Hope you have good evening flying on yours. Mary

Summary: A little about besom's
