Advantages: When it works it really works

Disadvantages: When it doesn't it doesn't

Safety equipment….Marigolds, one pair, yellow, CHECK. String vest, one, stringy, CHECK. Boxer shorts, one pair, over large and stripy, CHECK. Glasses, one pair, black national health and very thick, CHECK. So feeling very secure, a little chilly and not really being able to see where I’m going I can tell you all about my encounter with a frothing hole. Ah the things I do for my fellow man, selfless me.

Showering in the morning has been getting a pretty hairy experience, quite literally. The plughole was bunged up and showering every morning was like a game of Russian roulette, the water had to be turned just so otherwise the bathroom could flood. It was a game requiring nerves of steel and very, very small and careful steps. My nerves could take it no more I gave in and got the Mr. Muscle out.

Now this stuff on the face of it appears idiot proof, after all they advertise the stuff with a geek in boxer shorts, but never underestimate the power of idiocy. The instructions read simply, you run hot water down the plughole for at least one minute prior to adding the powder, then you add the powder from the packet and add another 500 mls of hot water and leave overnight.

I expect from my vast wealth of the scientific knowledge (If you believe that you’ll believe anything (if you did believe that please leave a comment, I’d like to talk to you about a time share…)) that the hot water first is to soften up the grease so the foam can penetrate, now here I think is where the problems can arise.

If you can’t get water into the hole in the first place to soften anything up it isn’t going to work, which is kind of what happens when the plughole is blocked (more scientific knowledge!!).

So next we add the powder and presto we have a foaming hole!! If only everything else in life were that easy….. Still there is another problem here if your hole drains slowly (ahem) then the r
esidual water can set off the foaming before it has the chance to really get down to the blockage. Chances are it will drain slowly since you have a bunged up hole.

Next job is to add 500 mls of water to get the foaming really going. The hitch here is if your hole is bunged (see above) then you don’t necessarily have the space for half a pint of creamy foam in your hole (personally I can never get enough creamy foam in my life but you don’t want to know about that) and any excess is wasted. The idea with the foam is that it gives the cleaner volume so it reaches both the top and the bottom of your drain and cleans thoroughly. Of course when the cream has spurted out like an overstuffed cream horn (ooeerrr) it isn’t doing its job down the hole.

Then you wait which I suppose is something even the dimmest of idiots is capable of. Though it can be very inconvenient not having a shower available, I managed to show restraint but it was tough…

Then after an overnight wait you wash water down your freshly unbunged hole.

The reviews I’ve read for this product are all very different, some like it and some hate it and that is because I don’t think the product is idiot proof. Not that I think that the other writers are idiots you understand, I just think the nature of plugholes is so variable. We used it twice the first time my wife did it with superb results, the second time I did it with less spectacular results. So guess who is the idiot in our household!!

My one concern about using this product is the impact this might have on the environment. My mind was put to ease when I read on the back of the packet that it is safe septic tanks and if a septic tank can remain unharmed by this then a river course is unlikely to be damaged. Now although I don’t know for sure a review by DaisyDuck (and a rather good one at that) stated this product had Sodium dichloriosocyanurate. This woul
d explain the chlorine smell when the product gets going. It’s probably advisable to keep clear of it whilst it’s working its magic as this smell can get quite strong. It also goes without saying you don’t mix it with other cleaners, this can generate nasty and rather poisonous gasses, not even the toughest of NHS specs and stripy boxers can protect you then!!

Originally I was going to rave about this stuff until of course I used it myself. I think all in all it is good stuff if it works properly, but that takes the right kind of situation and not some loon in boxers and string vest plunging holes he’s never plunged before.

Mr. Muscle foaming sink unblocker comes in packs of two for anywhere between £2.99 and £3.99.

See I can write an op that isn’t smutty after all, I never mentioned pubic hair once!! Oops!
