Advantages: It unblocks your sink, No need for a plunger, No need to remove the U bend

Disadvantages: It costs £3.29, This is vicious stuff if you touch it, drink it or pour it in to your eyes

For a few weeks now, you will be delighted to learn, the bathroom sink has been a little slow in swallowing the water down the plughole.

Joyously, whiskers from my shave have been collecting at the high tide mark as the water slowly drains away and, as a direct result, relations with Mrs Opinions4u have been a little frosty on those occasions I have failed to clean properly. I thought I had cleaned, but Mrs O has higher standards!

If I were a DIY kinda guy, I would have invested in a plunger. Better still, a few minutes under the sink removing the U bend may even have been in order.

But no. I am a pen pushing bean counter by trade. So what I cannot do, I pay for. And plumbers are out of reach for a mere mortal on the national average wage, what with children to fund and National Insurance increases to pay.

So, Mr Muscle Sink And Plughole Unblocker was purchased from my local Tesco. Amazing what a TV Advert can make you do!

The product itself is made by Johnsons, comes in a garish orange bottle and has green and yellow labels on it. Judging by the size of the bottle, I thought I would get three or four uses from it, but on reading the packet, the complete contents of this £3.29 purchase would be needed!

The labels give little indication as to what is in this stuff. Chlorine and non-ionic surfactants (my earlier review of Comfort Pure mentions these) sit alongside soap. But the label fails to account for 80% of the gunge in the bottle!

This stuff is corrosive. As such, it is probably best not to store it for long periods and it should not be mixed with other cleaning fluids as chlorine gas and its harmful effects are the likely results. I would recommend a pair of rubber gloves when using, as it apparently burns the skin on contact. Any skin contact should be immediately treated with water for a 20 minute period and then you should seek medical advice. Take the label with you when seeking trea
tment from a doctor. It goes without saying that eye contact or drinking is not recommended and children should not be able to get hold of this stuff. The child proofed lid is merely adequate! Ring 01276 852000 if you need further details from the manufacturer.

That is the end of the safety lecture. Does it work?

Well, at 2pm today, I poured the contents down the semi blocked sink. It sunk through the residue of water and, as instructed, I forgot about it for 30 minutes, banning my 5 year old from the bathroom (I had ensured he visited prior to using the stuff, as I did not want him washing his hands 5 minutes after I had used this!).

When I wandered back up to investigate the results, as instructed, I flushed the sink with hot water. It all drained away instantly. Mr Muscle Sink & Plughole Unblocker was a complete success and significantly cheaper and easier than getting hold of a weekend plumber!

Would I recommend it? Yes. But I suspect it would have failed if the sink had been in a significantly worse state than it was. In other words, use it early in the blocking cycle. Do not leave it to late.
