Advantages: Cleans the door with excellent results

Disadvantages: Doesn't do so well on the sides

I hate cleaning my oven and usually just pay someone to come round every so often and do the business for £35.00. This is extreme though and in between these times I have to clean it myself.

I have tried a few different cleaners but the one I seem to return to is Mr Muscle. I don't find it to be amazing or perfect in my fight against grime in my cooker but it does clean the glass door to a sparkling and clear finish and for this reason I tend to use it more than any other type.

It comes in a canister with a child proof lid. Once you have removed this it is a pretty standard aerosol can, and a squirt on the nozzle produces a thin jet of foam. You are meant to spray this foam all over a cold oven and leave for about half an hour. As I detest cleaning my oven so much, I usually leave it for an hour while I do the ironing or some other totally boring household chore before returning to inspect the grot.

And grot indeed is what I find. The mousse in most places has turned to a brown mass of bubbles lingering over the insides of the cooker. The glass door has miraculously cleaned itself but there are long dirty brown streaks of ooze running down it.

The worst part of the job ensues and finds me on my hands and knees (not good on a ceramic tile floor!) wiping up the gloopy, brown mess that has appeared off the sides and bottom of my oven. It is an embarrassing job actually and I make sure there is never anyone present apart from immediate family when I do this! They may never eat in my house again otherwise!

Mr Muscle works excellently on glass. I have no quibble with their muscle power here and usually a simple wipe over with a wet cloth will remove all the gross brown bubbles lingering around and then a wipe over with a bit of kitchen towel and bob's your uncle (in my case he actually is!).

I do find the inside of the oven to be slightly more of a chore though. I have to put in a little more elbow grease to remove all the nasty stuff from the shelf runners and this is where I don't feel Mr Muscle works so well. On flat surfaces where the foam has been left to soak in, like the bottom floor of the oven, it works well and again and I can usually wipe over the scum and it all removes easily.

In terms of the shelf runners where I have to clean harder, it still does not remove all the bumpy build up from these. I find I have to use a second application and even them sometimes only my oven lady can get rid of the burnt on stuff.

I normally wear rubber gloves to do this job, as you should, but occasionally I have run out and cleaned the cooker anyway, and Mr Muscle is quite tough on your hands. I found them stinging slightly while cleaning and once the job was done, my skin was very dry and tight and a bit sore. However a good application of cream sorts them out, so while you should always wear gloves; it will not be the end of the world if you get some on you, unless you have very sensitive skin.

I buy my Mr Muscle from Sainsbury's and it is pretty cheap really for oven cleaner at around £1.85 for a can. The can will last approximately two cleans so this is pretty economical and does help me save face slightly when my oven lady comes.

Overall, I will continue to buy Mr Muscle because I think it does a reasonable job. Maybe if I were to clean my oven more often, it would not take as much work to clean the sides. Or maybe I should just buy takeaway every night and stop using the oven completely! I like that idea! 

Summary: RECOMMENDED xx

I think you have pretty much caught the whole oven thing up in a nutshell as I have found this to be the case with Mr Muscle too. They must be very small muscles though. Not quite man enough for the job but pretty good
