Advantages: Cleans even the stinkiest oven
Disadvantages: It smells terrible
Some people are just born to do housework aren?t they? Sadly I?m not one. I hate it. With a passion. Don?t get me wrong, my house is not a tip, it?s always clean but it is a bit untidy although we call it the ?lived in look?. When I say untidy I mean you?ll find PS2 games littered around the TV, toys out in the kids bedroom and computer games on the bedroom floors. I?m a firm believer that houses should at least have that lived in look but when I opened my oven door at the weekend I wondered if something had crawled inside and died.????. I detest cleaning ovens and have even toyed with the idea of getting one of those oven cleaning firms in to do it for me. There are two things that stop me though. The first is the fact that I work from home and have no excuse for not doing it at some point during my working week, and the second is I?d begrudge paying money for someone else to clean my baked on grime for me ? a bit like having the team round from ?How Clean is your House??. Anyway it must have been a couple of months at least since the cooker got a good cleaning so the glass door was in a bit of a mess, as was the bottom on the main oven and the top one. I don?t do plain cooking so ninety percent of the food cooked in my oven will either have a sauce or marinade, and although it makes our meal times interesting it makes a hell of a mess of the oven. We love lamb smothered in honey and you only have to see the mess it leaves in the bottom of the meat dish to know that it?s not doing the oven much good either. I?ve tried a few oven cleaners since I moved away from Mater and Pater?s but there?s only one that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone and that?s the bright orange and green can of Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner. I suppose I?ve been in love with Mr?s Muscles for about six years now
and I?ll do my best to explain why. Mr. Muscle can be found flexing his bits on the shelves of most supermarkets and corner shops and his bright colouring makes him instantly recognisable on the shelf. You will find him with the rest of the cleaning equipment for us poor downtrodden housewives and a 300ml can normally sets me back around the £1.82 mark at Tesco. I?m sure the cleaner has gone down in price though as I seem to remember paying a lot more when I first bought it as Mr. Muscle products seemed to be slightly more expensive than others of the same type. Mr. Muscle comes in an aerosol container and has to be used on a cold oven. That?s an advantage straight away as the ones you have to use after warming the oven emit a combination of chemical smells and grease ? not pleasant. The aerosol is very thick and as it comes into contact with any surface it spreads and erupts so a can of this really does last a long time. A word of caution though ? the can does state to use in a well ventilated area and this is imperative as the cleaner absolutely reeks. It?s one of those smells that catches in the back of your throat and unless you?ve got air circulating it will make you gag and heave. I normally clean my oven with the extractor on and the back door open to alleviate the problem but it?s sensible not to get too close to the foam and breathe in the noxious fumes. Simply squirt Mr. Muscle into the oven and leave it for half an hour to loosen the gungy bits. The oven door(s) can be left open or closed during the procedure and I normally close mine over purely because I?ve got a schizoid dog in the house who is a bit brain dead and would probably think the noxious smelling foam was some sort of snack. I always put two or three layers of newspaper on the floor as well as this will catch the pieces of gunk when you?ve finished cleaning. After half an hour
you?ll find that the pristine white foam has shrunk and is disintegrating in places, it has also mixed in with the grease and grime in the oven and has gone a horrible brown colour. But here?s the good bit????..you don?t have to scrape, scratch, or rub at any of the greasy bits in the oven as after half an hour of Mr. Muscle doing his business they can simply be wiped away with a piece of kitchen roll or newspaper. This is where the newspaper on the floor comes into force, as I simply wipe the bottom of the oven out onto the paper and it?s amazing the amount of brown crispy pieces that Mr Muscle has gently lifted from the oven base. I also use Mr. Muscle on the oven shelves and the oven door which as it has a glass panel does get brown streaks from the various meat sauces that I?ve cooked over the past few months. So that?s it. How to clean a cooker in a few easy steps. Why do I like Mr. Muscle so much? A number of reasons really. I love the fact that you simply squirt and leave the foam to do its job instead of having to watch over the procedure with scourer in hand to scrub any stuck on bits in the oven. I love the fact that one of these containers will give me at least six applications on my main and top ovens plus the hob and the doors. I love the fact that Mr. Muscle really does do what it says on the tin but I hate the smell ? really hate it. There are a couple of things to remember when using Mr. Muscle. Don?t use it near children. Wear protective gloves as it can be an irritant to skin. Avoid getting the foam into the eyes and if you do have an accident the eyes need to be rinsed for 20 minutes before seeking medical advice. The same applies if it comes into contact with the skin and causes a reaction or if it is inadvertently swallowed. Considering my oven was in dire need of a clean Mr. &
#77;uscle really did come up trumps at the weekend. Even though there was a large amount of greasy smelly brown stuff in the oven, I didn?t have to rub, scrub or exert myself at all, my little green and orange power bucket did it all on his own. I?m going to marry Mr. Muscle and have his babies.
