Advantages: Quick, easy, works, known brand
Disadvantages: Pricey for one plughole, corrosive
To my mind Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker is one of those products that when you find it, it is a God send. Unfortunately it is a little pricey but it works. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed our bath water has not been draining away as quickly as it used to. We have one of those loose plughole filters which usually stops too much yuk finding it's way down the drain but obviously some has got through. This morning as I showered, and found myself standing in water that should have ran away, I resolved to buy some Mr Muscle, when I popped to town at lunch. I went into Wilko and bought a bottle of Mr Muscle sink and plughole unblocker and it cost £3.95 for a 500ml bottle. I told you it was pricey.
Wilkinson's had a few other brands, and makes, in this department but the trouble is I do not know if they will work. One appeared to be caustic soda which I could buy from our local DIY. However I think this is too harsh for inside the home and only use it on outside drains.
So I arrived home tonight armed with the bright orange bottle and set to work. This product is so easy to use and fast to work. The bottle recommends that you pour all of the contents of the bottle down the plughole. You leave it to work it's magic, for about 15 minutes, then flush with hot tap water and voila'.
As I knew the bath drain was not full of grease and the like I actually only used half of the bottle and the other half on the bathroom sink, just to make sure that they both are clear. The liquid is a thick glutinous sort of substance. However as with most of these things you need to be careful. As you open the bottle you must not squeeze in case any splashes out and onto you. You need to make sure the kids are out of the way before using and take care not to get any on your hands or face. Even after you have rinsed the product away you must not use a plunger. This is because if there is any product remaining in the drain it could splash you. In my kitchen I often rinse away with a kettle of hot water after doing the initial rinse, just to make sure. However as the liquid is so thick it is easy to make sure that it goes where it should.
Obviously a fully blocked plughole will need a full bottle of the product and it may need to be left soaking overnight. However that would have to be some dirty plughole. You have to be careful just what you use this on and there are warnings on the bottle. I would always recommend that you read the label of a product like this before using, especially for the first time. The liquid does contain Sodium Hydroxide and so obviously it is a little smelly, cannot be mixed with other products and care needs to be exercised when using it.
The warnings are extensive so do make sure that you read them all.
I recommend this product though if you have a blocked plughole to clear.
All such products will have dangers and I think this one is no better or worse than others. On the upside though, as I have said:
It works
Is easy
Is convenient
Just take care.
Thanks for reading
