Advantages: Does the job

Disadvantages: Expensive

I knew that my outside drains have been blocked for a while, but it was always one of those things that I tried to ignore. However, when my neighbour came around banging on my front door and moaning that my blocked drain had flooded across his garden I knew that it was finally time to take action.

A few minutes of poking around with a big stick convinced me that this was not going to be a simple task. The foul stench of stagnant water drifting upwards, also confirmed that there was no way that I had any intentions of sticking my arm down that hole, either with or without a marigold glove on my hand.

I had seen the adverts for Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker on TV without really taking much notice, but such is the power of advertising that it stores these little snippets of information somewhere in the brain, ready to be retrieved as and when appropriate. So within a matter of seconds of thinking "Oh no, blocked drain" my subconscious kicked into action and like a word association game I though "Oh, I think I need some of that Mr Muscle unblocker stuff".

At £3.69 for a one-litre bottle down at my local Sainsbury's supermarket this product does not come cheap. On returning home and reading the instructions I realised that it was recommended to use half of this bottle to unblock a blockage. I was now beginning to think that this product was even more expensive, but it was bought now, and if it did the job that it promised, then I would happy.

Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker comes in a bright orange coloured plastic bottle. It can be found amongst the bleaches, disinfectants and other household cleaning products, but to be honest since I was not sure exactly what I was looking for it did not instantly leap out at me.

As with all products of this kind it is always important to read the instructions on the bottle before using for the first time. I was aware that anything that promised to dissolve the unpleasant dregs of my drains had to be pretty powerful stuff and I certainly did not want to run the risk of losing half of my skin whilst unblocking the drain.

According the instructions 500ml of this liquid should be used. It should be poured down the blocked plughole and then rinsed away with hot water after 15 minutes. In my case it was not actually a plughole that was blocked so I poured the liquid directly down my drain. It does advise on the bottle that the liquid can be left overnight to remove more severe blockages. I had already decided that this was the way forward for me.

The liquid is yellow in colour and smells like strong, good quality bleach and has a similar, though slightly thicker more gel like consistency compared with bleach. The liquid pours easily out of the bottle but caution should be taken not to get any of it on your skin, as this product is highly corrosive. If this liquid does come into contact with your skin, it should be washed off immediately, following the instructions on the bottle.

The liquid has a nice, refreshing smell but this is rather subtle but it does mean that as well as unblocking your plughole it also leaves it smelling clean and fresh meaning that there is no need to use a separate disinfectant or bleach afterwards.

I was not too sure what to expect when I poured this liquid down the drain. As the liquid emptied out of the bottle I stood back, half expecting there to be a fizz and a rush of stagnant water thrust into the air, but in fact there was nothing so dramatic.

Within a matter of seconds however I could actually see this liquid starting to work. The small pool of water at the bottom of my drain slowly started to disappear before my eyes, leaving behind a thick mushy mess of something that resembled soggy paper mache. But as I stood over my grate and peered down I could actually see tiny bubbles forming underneath this messy mush, this magic liquid was actually eating away all the nasty deposits that had been lurking at the bottom of my drain.

I left the drain overnight and the next morning rinsed it thoroughly with hot water from the tap. The water drained away quickly confirming that this Mr Muscle Sink and Plughole Unblocker had done everything that it had promised.

Summary: It cleared my blocked drains in seconds
