Original Zippo Deluxe Hand Warmer
Advantages: Lasts For Hour & Keeps Hands Warm.
Disadvantages: Bit Tricky To Fill With Lighter Fluid.
Now I am anything but an outdoors enthusiast, in fact I'm what you'd call an indoors enthusiast, unless we're talking about doing a bar crawl or walking around shops! Therefore I very rarely feel the need to buy anything remotely linked to the good old outdoors. Unfortunately that came back to bite me in the bum yesterday morning at school when I was reminded I was going on a winter nature walk and, despite the -10 degrees showing on the thermometer, it would still be going ahead. I was obviously dressed very appropriately (in a blazer, leggings and ankle boots) so I had to have a quick hunt for more suitable clothing before setting off!
One of the other teachers recommended I borrow their Zippo Hand Warmer to which I replied "Your what?!" while imagining an animal shaped hand cosy or something similar! To my surprise they produced a chrome finished rectangular object with curved edges that looked similar to a plug socket! It's just a little bigger than my palm and has a chrome finished effect, it has the Zippo brand name on the lower half and eight holes on the upper half that go right through it. It's basically a gas powered hand warmer that can be kept in your pockets and will give out heat whenever it is turned on in order to keep your hands warm during the cold weather.
The Zippo Hand Warmer is really easy to use, you simply need to ensure it has got fuel in it and then light the burner before placing it in your pocket. To light it you need to use a lighter and place it on the burner area, before turning it over and repeating the same. When it's lit you simply place the lid back on and you're ready to go! The heat starts to be given out almost immediately and it was really toasty within about a minute, It comes with a fleece pouch which you can place it in for safe keeping, I did this and found it didn't give out as much heat as the pouch insulated the heat on so would recommend using it without the pouch.
It's powered by lighter fuel which is readily available, when it's filled to the brim with lighter fuel apparently it can last around twenty four hours but my friend said she'd found it to last around thirty to thirty five hours. I was initially a bit worried about lighting it in case it exploded (I don't really have a good effect when fire is involved!) yet as long as you hold the blue part of the flame, oppose to the yellow part, to the burner it's absolutely fine and lights instantly. I found it really easy to light and to work out how to light it as well, normally I'm a bit of a slow snail when it comes to working out how things work but not with this!
I really don't have anything negative to say about this clever little device. Having read some reviews online there are a few complaints flying around saying that it doesn't get hot enough but, as the title suggests, it is designed to warm your hands rather than to burn everything that it comes into contact with! It' won't get your hands boiling or sweating but I honestly can't imagine anyone wanting that while they're out walking. Some have also said it can get too hot but that's really what the little pouch is for, I started off with the pouch but found it was fine without however other people may want it to be slightly cooler really.
The only downside I have found it that once it is lit there's no real way to "put it out" so to speak. There isn't an off switch once it's lit and the only real way to get it to cool down is to let it run out of lighter fuel. However my friend said that she merely places her hand warmer in an old tobacco tin and when it's used up all the available oxygen in there it simply extinguishes itself. I kept it on for the whole of our nature walk and it ran out of lighter fuel just as we returned to school but I have read about people using a similar sort of method and it does seem the safest way to put it out if you don't want to wait for it to run out.
I'd recommend the Zippo Hand Warmer, especially if you spend a lot of time outside during the winter. I personally won't be investing one as I like to keep my contact with the cold weather to a minimum! The Zippo Hand Warmer costs £19.99 on Google at present which seems to be quite a standard price. In terms of running costs you obviously need to buy lighter fuel, Zippo do their own version for £4.79 for 125ml but my friend uses a standard Ronson one which she buys for under £2 for a larger bottle. A bottle would fill the Zippo Hand Warmer about four to five times in total, only downside is there's always going to be additional costs!
Thanks for reading.
Summary: A hand warmer that is powered by a burner and lighter fuel.
