Oust Aerosol Clean Scent - 300 ml £1 at Tesco
So Oust claims like many other branded and non branded air fresheners that it will eliminate the causes of nasty niffs rather than just mask them. I figured at the cost of £1 it was wortht trying it out to see if this was really the case.
The tin has a pale blue lid, and claims to be fragranced as 'clean scent'... So on first spraying I have to admit I just went a bit mad. I like my house to smell nice and fresh and would normally open the windows and sit shivering under a blanket with the heating on. However not long ago - disaster I broke the handle off one of my windows. Not wanting to pay for an emergency call out I had to wait a full 10 days to get someone round. Being just a bit paranoid about rats I can't bear to leave my back door open for long periods of time unless I am right by it making noise so I really couldn't bring myself to do that (the broken window was never a fire hazard as I'd never fit through it)...
Now the scent when first sprayed is not unpleasant, it kind of smells reminiscent of fabric softener - nice fresh with a nameless kind of scent. And after a while it did seems to act to neutralise the kind of musty smell in the kitchen. I have to say though it wasn't as good as opening a window would have been - and fresh air is free...
Also I would be more concerned long term about what was causing the nasty niff in the first place. I mean yes I had burned toast and cooked tea in the room, but if it were a long term smell I would highly recommend tracing and removing what ever might be causing it.
I have to say as a temporary fix I would recommend it as it did neutralise the air in the house, but it was a kind of chemical overload and I would say that it was important to make sure it didn't get on any food or onto dishes that would be eaten off. I would recommend it but not long term and I still prefer good old fashioned fresh air...
Summary: It's a good temporary fix
