“ Brand: Oust / Type: Dishwasher Powder / Subcategory: Descaler / Category: Cleaning & Disinfectant „
OUST is by far one of the brands we trust most with our dishes especially the washing machine.
When we brought a HOTPOINT washing machine three years ago it came with a free pack of its own detergent or cleaner for the machine which we assumed the manufacturers put in because this was the ideal one for the machine and felt quite confident with a brand such as HOTPOINT to recommend this.
It was not a leading brand, it wasn't even a name we recognised at all however we tried it and the first wash went okay but from the second onwards our machine began to smell a bit and we noticed the water wasn't flowing easily, crazy noises were coming from the machine.
On recommendation of a friend, we purchased OUST and to be honest from the first application onwards it's given us a clean and clear washing machine, which no issues no smells nothing, the only smell is a slight detergent scent.
What surprised me was the great value and amount we received in the box.
For £2.99 on special offer, we had three sachets that was recommended to use every three months so that gave us nearly a year of cleaning.
They recommend cleaning every three months in hard water areas and in soft water areas six months by logging onto our local water company I was able to find out what was good for us and it was easy to see on the map that we were hard water.
I would highly recommend using this as long term, nearly three years, we have thankfully endured no issues.
When we moved house, we inherited a kitchen with built in appliances - which included a dishwasher. As with all things, I wanted to give it a good clean before I used it. This included running a wash with a specialist dishwashing cleaning product. However, after this, there was still a line of water marks and some scale around the inside of the machine. I have previously used Oust to descale my kettle and been very pleased with the results so when I saw that they had a specialist dishwasher and washing machine descaler I decided to give this a try.
The product comes in a blue cardboard box with a picture of a dishwasher and a washing machine on it. It cost me a little over £2 from Amazon. Inside the box, there are two sachets of product. Each sachet is white in colour and contains instructions for use - which is basically to add to the detergent dispenser in each appliance and run a wash cycle. The sachets can be snipped open and the liquid poured into the machine - it is clear and colourless with a slight 'detergent' like scent. It is said to 'descale and deep clean in one removing the limescale, food and detergent deposits'.
I used this both in my dishwasher and washing machine. It is very quick and easy to use. After using on a hot wash cycle, my dishwasher was noticeably shinier, with the stainless steel parts gleaming and water marks and scale removed. It was also effective in my washing machine and left the drum looking cleaner. I would say the cleaner was more effective on limescale than it was on detergent or food deposits - but as I had bought this primarily to treat the limescale this didn't worry me too much. The effects lasted for a month or so and I now tend to treat both machines every other month to keep on top of it. For the price of the cleaner, I think that this is reasonable value. It is certainly a quick and easy way to achieve noticeable results - recommended.
This is a review of Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler which is a product to deep clean either machine. I am focusing my review on using this with a washing machine as we used a different liquid cleaner on our dishwasher recently.
What is it?
The Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler is a powder which comes in a two pack so you get two applications with each purchase. I just used the second of ours, having used the other one ages ago.
It's really easy to use this cleaner in your machine. You empty the sachet in to the drum (not the drawer!) and select a 60 degree wash without pre wash to clean your washing machine. The sachet has to be opened with scissors as there is no easy tear lip which is slightly irritating when you are in a room without scissors!
It didn't really occur to me that a washing machine needs cleaning, you'd think it'd clean itself with each cycle but then if you think about a bath towel, they still need washing even though they are used when you are clean! Water can get a bit fusty when stood still and if you want clean clothes to come out of the machine, it's worth while putting a little effort into keeping the machine clean. It can also prolong the life of your appliance if you regularly attack the limescale that can build up.
Technical and geographical
I live in a hard water area (not moderate or very, just hard). This means I should run the cleaner every three months. If you live in a soft water area then you can do it every six months you lucky things! If you are not sure you can visit a handy website called dynapipe.co.uk which will tell you by postcode and chart how hard your water is! According to their own statistics, they list Hull, Guildford and Peterborough as being the top three hard water areas so hi to you if you live there!!
You can pick up Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler at the supermarket which is where we most likely bought our box but you can also buy online from Amazon with free P&P for £5.92 (remember, you get two sachets!).
The washing machine smells fresh and ready for action after running Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler and it's one of those jobs that probably gets left longer than it should do according to the advised length of time. I do believe that it is worth looking after appliances, they are expensive and don't last forever and it is a false economy to not tackle limescale as your clothes won't get as clean as they might if your machine is serviced in this way. For the price paid I think this is good value for money and I will continue to buy Oust in the future for this very task.
I've been noticing recently that my washing machine has started to smell a bit fusty and stale, not very nice at all it also wasn't spinning as well as it should. I had tried doing an empty wash with vinegar, and also doing the hottest wash the machine does with an empty drum but nothing worked. I mentioned this to my mum and she gave me a sachet of Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler. She had had a workman out to mend the door on her dishwasher and he left her with a box of 3 sachets. I had never heard of this product but had nothing to lose so I tried it.
Oust dishwasher and washing machine descaler is sold in sachets which are plain white with black writing on them. The sachet gives the instructions for both dishwashers and washing machines, it also gives a small warning stating that should any of the powder get spilt onto any surfaces then it must be washed with hot water as soon as possible. It also has an orange cross on the back of the sachet which indicates that the powder is an irritant and you should avoid getting any on your skin.
To use in your washing machine you simply need to pour the powder directly into the empty drum of the machine and run a 60oC cycle without a pre wash. I snipped the corner from the sachet and poured it in my machine. The Oust powder looks very much like washing powder and has a fresh slight lemony smell. I set the machine to 60oC and left the powder to do its thing.
Once the cycle had ended I opened the machine door and was pleased to be greeted with a clean and fresh smelling washing machine. Obviously I cannot see the inside of the machine, the pipes etc but I was pleased with what I could see and smell. The next time I did a regular wash I found the machine remained fresh and actually spun properly for the first time in ages. The workman who left these for mum said it will clean and strip all the gunge and gunk that builds up in the pipes, now while I cannot actually see evidence of this I can only assume that the Oust did this as my machine has run well and remained fresh since I used it.
Oust recommend using this every 3 months if you live in a hard water area and every 6 months if your water is soft. I for one will certainly be doing this, although I cannot personally comment on how this works in a dishwasher but my mum was very pleased with how it cleaned hers.
If you are looking for something to keep your washing machine or dishwasher clean and fresh then I can definitely recommend Oust, it costs £3.29 for 3 sachets from www.amazon.co.uk which will give you enough for 9 or18 months, depending on what your water is like, which I think is well worth the money.
I live in a hard water area, so my appliances often experience a build up of limescale over time, which leads to a reduced level of performance. I had noticed that my washing machine was suffering a bit, as my laundry loads had started to come out with small white patches on the fabric. At first I thought this might have been my washing powder or fabric softener not dissolving properly, but after a few times of it happening I figured out that it was probably time to give my washing machine a clean.
I opted for this Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler, which I bought from Wilkinsons for just 99p. The box contains 2 x 75g sachets, so you can get two uses from the one box. This seems good value for money, and if you have both appliances then you can give them a clean at the same time. I don't have a dishwasher so I can only comment on how this has worked when using it in my washing machine. I am pleased to say that it worked very well indeed!
Product description: "Limescale can build up unseen inside large appliances reducing their performance over time and ultimately even shortening their life. Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler is specially formulated to safely and effectively restore these appliances to their best. It descales and deep-cleans in one, removing the limescale, food and detergent deposits. It is important to descale appliances regularly; limescale build-up causes damage to the element, shortening its life. It also reduces the efficiency of appliances, making them more costly to run."
Directions for use in washing machines: Suitable for front-loading automatic machines only. Empty washing machine and add the contents of one sachet to the drum. Select and run a 60 degrees C cycle without pre-wash. To keep appliances good-as-new and running efficiently, descale every 3 months in hard water areas and every 6 months in soft water areas.
One of the reasons I was so impressed with this product is that it is incredibly easy to use. I certainly begrudge having to put too much time and effort into cleaning, and this product made the job in hand very simple. The sachet is filled with a clear liquid, and all I had to do was tear the sachet open and pour the contents into the washing machine drum, then turn the machine on and let it run a wash cycle. Easy peasy! Afterwards the washing machine was left with a tinge of a funny smell, sort of chemical and acidic, but I left the washing machine door open and this disappeared over a short time. I went ahead and washed my next load of laundry with no problems at all, there was no residual smell and best of all I am not getting any more white marks on my clothes. The Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler worked effectively and the insides of my machine have been cleaned out, which will hopefully keep things running more smoothly and working effectively. I am not convinced that I will need to use this as frequently as every 3, or even every 6 months, but I will certainly be happy to use this again as it has given me the results that I was hoping for and has improved the performance of my washing machine.
I would happily recommend Oust Dishwasher and Washing Machine Descaler as a purse-friendly way to improve the running of your washing machine. It pays to take care of your expensive appliances and I know I couldn't cope without my washing machine, so I will definitely be looking after it and using this descaler again in the future.
This product is by far the best descaler on the market for washing machines and dishwashers. this type of product is more aimed at people in hard water areas i.e. London and it prolongs the life of the machines as it removes the limescale from the machine which clogs it up. products such as Calgon tablets are so much more expensive as you have to use one in every wash and usually cost around £4 for 20 tablets whereas the Oust Descaler is about £2.50 for two sachets that only need to be done between every 3 and 6 months depending on how much you use your machine.
