Advantages: Barely any effort required to get a gleaming oven

Disadvantages: Strong chemicals - gloves supplied aren't up to the job

After recently scalding my arm I have to admit that housework hasn't exactly been the first thing on my mind.

However after a couple of weeks of severe pain I am now on the mend and this week I was able to tackle some of the neglected chores needing doing.

Top of the list was cleaning my oven, a chore I had been procrastinating over for some time.

I got the nudge to do it on a visit to Morrisons where Oven Pride is on offer - its £1 off and therefore set me back £2.59. Now this is quite expensive for an oven cleaner, especially one that will only be used once, but given how easy it is to use, I find it money well spent.

Oven Pride comes in a box and contains the bottle of cleaner fluid, small blue latex gloves and a huge ziploc style plastic bag.

To begin, you must cover the floor area around your oven with newspaper. This stuff is pretty hardcore and could easily ruin your floor, especially if it is pale coloured, so better to be safe than sorry.

You then need to put the gloves on. I actually would recommend you ignore the blue gloves that come in the packet and put on a pair of longer rubber gloves as you really need to ensure its not just your hands covered but most of your lower arm area too. Even a tiny splash of this stuff on your skin stings so be prepared!

Start by removing the racks from your oven and then squirting solution on the oven and gently working it around the surfaces with a sponge. Ensure all areas are covered but don't "cake" it - just ensure the greasy areas have a film like covering.

Now we get to the fun bit - using the bag!

To use this, you place your oven racks inside the bag and then add the solution so it covers the racks when the bag is laid flat. Ensure the bag is completely sealed - this is very important as I once failed to do this and half the solution ended up on my kitchen floor! Luckily my floor is dark and this wasn't too much of a disaster but the newspaper it landed on turned a dark shade of yellow very quickly - so take care and liberally spread newspaper on the floor.

And then...well you can put your feet up! You leave the bag and and oven for 4 hours to do the work - although Oven Pride do suggest you "turn" the bag after a couple of hours - and when the time has passed you get those rubber gloves on again and rinse it off!

The results are amazing for so little work - the racks come up like new and no scouring or rubbing is required - just careful rinsing!

I first saw this on daytime TV a few years ago and now I absolutely swear by it - no longer is cleaning the oven the chore it used to be!

I would add that if your oven is particularly filthy you can leave this on overnight before rinsing in the morning.

So come on - what do you have to lose? Have your sleep and let Oven Pride do the work for you!

Summary: A bottle and a bag will get your oven sparkling!
