Advantages: very little work, very little smell, did I mention very little work

Disadvantages: Full of chemicals but then thats what makes it work

While I did think about giving the oven a good seeing too prior to cooking the turkey I was wary about leaving a chemical taste or smell behind afterwards which might taint the turkey so refrained and put oven cleaning into my lets start of the new year in the way to which we would like to become accustomed and get the house clean and shiny before 12:00 midnight pile.

I have to admit I'm as bad at constantly buying kitchen and oven cleaners as I am at constantly buying new improved brands of face and hair creams and masks. I have tried all the usual brand names and haven't been overly pleased by any of them. All seemed to take a lot of elbow grease, and where very chemically which you were not allowed to inhale or touch with your bare hands.

The best one I had was from QVC called grillomat which cost around £26.00 for two bottles. This bottle did a wonderful job on the ceramic hob, oven glass and the bottom of the oven but it didn't cling to the racks well enough and although it did clean them there was a fair amount of rubbing and scraping involved and they were still only about 90% clean and shiny.

I recently read a good review on Dooyoo about oven pride, a product I had seen numerous times but for some reason had never tried. The review mentioned popping racks into a large bag, squirting in some liquid and coming back to shiny new racks with no elbow grease involved at all. It all sounded great in theory and got even better when I arrived in Tesco to discover it was just over £3.00 for the full kit. Into the trolly it went.

I started the new years eve cleaning regime a couple of days early just to make sure it all got done in good time. First up was the oven. We have a hotpoint double fan oven which has self cleaning sides so the only part which really required tackling were the racks, the bottom and the glass.

- - What comes in the kit - -

1 x pair of rubber gloves
1 x plastic bag for oven racks/trays
1 x bottle of cleaning solution

- - How do you use it - -

I started with the racks. As the top oven which we only use as a grill is easily wiped clean after use I just removed the racks from the larger fan oven. I have to admit there was a good few burnt bits and splashes on them as we do make roast potatoes etc on a regular basis. Having read the instructions it was simply a matter of popping both racks into the bag and emptying half the bottle of oven pride in with them, sealing the bag and then setting them aside. Turning the bag after 30 minutes to ensure the racks are all coated evenly.

When I went to turn the bag over I was very impressed to see that the liquid inside had already started to darken and there was already more of a shine on the racks. Although you were only supposed to turn it once I did find myself turning it occasionally just to move the liquid and see the results.

While the bag was doing its job I spread some of the liquid around the bottom of the oven and on the glass, they don't give you anything to do this with but I had the little nylon brush from my previous cleaner so used this, be careful not to put the liquid onto any self cleaning bits of the oven or anything like the light or fan.

- - The Results - -

I didn't even leave the solution on the oven for the full four hours before washing it off with a hot soapy sponge. It was easier to remove than my old oven cleaner and left the glass sparking with no japs of oil etc. to be seen. The bottom of the oven was also clear of any burnt on debris which had fallen on it and become baked on.

Next morning there was a communal de-bagging of the oven racks as we were all sad enough to want to see the results of this new fangled cleaning solution. The racks slipped out easily and rinsed clean in hot soapy water in seconds. No exaggeration - they were shining like brand new, possibly even shinier. A quick dry off and back into the now sparkling oven they went. We all stood around admiring what essentially looked like a brand new oven.

Admittedly I didn't want to actually use the oven after this but moneywise we can't afford to send out for Chinese everynight so the oven had to be turned on. Previously when I have used oven cleaners once the oven starts up white marks begin to show meaning that although it had looked clear not all of the chemical solution had been removed. This time as the oven heated up no white marks or chemical smell was evident.

There is still about a third of a bottle left so I can continue to clean the bottom of the oven and the glass and once the racks need doing again I'll be buying another bottle to get another sealable bag.

This would also be great for barbeque grills as long as you can fit them into the bag, I tried to put ours in with the other racks just to get the full use out of it but it was too wide.

- - Conclusion - -

Several uses later and the oven is still sparkling like new, I haven't actually spilt anything in it yet (give me time I always do) but I imagined the racks would dull down and they haven't at all. There was very little odour from the solution while cleaning but no remnants of an odour while using the oven later.

Warning : Wear the rubber gloves provided while using the solution.

There is also a large red caution notice written on the box. CAUTION: This product actually works! And it does.

This is a five star product and the best oven cleaning solution with the least amount of effort required that I have ever used. I don't think I'll ever use anything else.

Summary: If it could cook as well as it cleans I'd marry it.
