Advantages: Easy to use and really effective!
Disadvantages: Can burn if it gets on your skin
Like most people I am a walking contradiction when it comes to my oven - I love cooking in it, I love being clean and shiny but I HATE cleaning it! Homepride seemed to know this and developed Oven Pride, which is in my opinion the greatest oven cleaner available.....
The packaging:
The cardboard packaging is predominately orange fading to blue at the bottom and has the name Oven Pride in large white letters working it's way up the box. Inside the box is the bottle of cleaning solution and a large resealable polythene - more on these later.
The use:
Oven Pride is used to clean the dirt, grime and general filth from the inside of ovens - the only surfaces it can't be used on are zinc, copper, aluminium, painted surfaces or self cleaning oven liner. It is corrosive so I would urge you not to get any on the oven seals.
To use it you have to remove the oven shelves (if your oven is like mine then these will be filthy!!), place them into the corner of the large bag and pour around half of the 500ml cleaning solution into it. Seal the bag and fold over the edges so you can be sure that the shelves are getting all of the cleaning solution, apply the remaining solution to the inside of your oven and....................................walk away! That's right, walk away and leave it to soak for a while - the recommended time is 2 hours from memory, but my mother in law leaves it in for around 18 hours and I left it on for about 12 with no negative effects.
Almost immediately you will see the solution change colour to a grimey brown (the colour your oven shelves previously were!) as it removes the dirt. Every couple of hours or so I liked to turn the bag over so I could be sure that every inch was getting cleaned and I found that the liquid was getting darker each time. When you come back to the oven, remove the shelves from the bag, give them a good rinse to remove and remaining solution and use your normal washing up sponge to give them a once-over. Lay some paper under the oven, open it up and, using a new cloth, wipe away the Oven Pride and the dirt - this is not a nice job by any means but seeing your oven back to it's former shininess makes it worthwhile (in my opinion!).
Disadvantages?:
There are a couple:
*It is corrosive and can cause burns so please be sure to wear gloves when using it and ensure that any kids are kept well away from it.
*Fumes. The instructions state not to breathe any fumes - I wasn't aware of any when I used it, but please be sure to keep the kitchen well ventilated during use.
Price:
Sorry, I don't remember how much we paid in Tesco for it but a quick Google search showed that Wilkinson's currently have it reduced from £3.99 to £2.99. Considering how infrequently you would need to use it, I would be more than happy to pay either price.
Recommended?:
Yes! This stuff is great, I know I'm probably starting to sound a bit like an Oven Pride superfan but it really does work. Plus at £2.99 it's a bargain, particularly if your oven isn't as bad as mine and you are able to make it last for 2 or 3 applications!
I would have no hesitations in recommending this to everyone however I would reiterate the need to wear good gloves and to be careful to not get any on your skin.
Summary: Great product but use with care
