Advantages: Effortless cleaning, with great results
Disadvantages: None
A friend of mine recently recommended this product to me, saying it worked a treat on her oven, leaving the shelves gleaming.
I have tried other oven cleaners before, and always find you have to scrub and scrub, so I was not convinced this product would actually be as good as she said it was.
Oven Pride is not cheap. I paid just over £4.00 at Morrisons, having decided I would give it a go. "It better work" I was muttering to myself after parting with my cash.
It comes in an orange box with the words "Caution: This product actually works!" written on the top.
Inside the box you get a 500ml bottle of cleaning gel, a plastic rack cleaning bag and disposable gloves.
The information on the box tells you it is suitable for use on all alkali resistant surfaces such as stainless steel and enamels. It can also be used on tempered glass, grills, enamel hobs and stainless steel pans.
It must not be used on aluminium, zinc, copper, painted surfaces or on self-cleaning oven linings.
Cleaning your oven sounds really simple using this, and having used it, I have to agree it is!
To clean your oven, make sure you are wearing the gloves and give the bottle of cleaning gel a good shake.
Pour some of the the gel into the centre of the oven and spread it around to cover the entire surface. I used a sponge to spread it around, and it took me a few seconds. I also poured some onto the glass door on the oven.
Then you just leave it to do its work. You must leave it for at least 4 hours, or overnight if you prefer. I just poured the gel into my oven one morning and left it until tea-time.
Cleaning the racks is also easy. Remove them from the oven and place them in the plastic bag provided. Then pour in the remaining gel. Oven Pride recommend you use half of the gel in the oven and the other half on the racks, but it depends how dirty each part is.
I used more of the gel for my racks than I did in the oven, as the racks were in a sorry state I am ashamed to admit.
After pouring the gel into the bag, seal it, and just leave the racks soaking in the bag, again for at least four hours.
I did lift up the bag and shake it about a little to distribute the gel evenly over the racks inside. I could see the grease and grime coming off the racks right away!
It is important to remember not to let the solution come into contact with rubber seals on the oven door, and be careful not to let it drip onto the floor or surfaces not intended to be cleaned.
Always wear the gloves provided. The solution contains Sodium Hydroxide.
So, did it actually work?
Yes it did! I was amazed by the results and it really was effortless!
It was easy to remove the residue from the bottom of the oven by wiping it over with a cloth and some hot soapy water. No scrubbing needed at all!
It only took a couple of minutes and my oven was really clean.
The racks looked like new, when I removed them from the bag and rinsed them with hot soapy water. The gel inside the bag was brown and filthy gunge, my racks were silver again, and gleaming!
I was really pleased with the results and have been recommending Oven Pride to all my friends.
It will be the only oven cleaner I will be using from now on. It may seem expensive, but it was worth every penny.
My oven looks like new, and I didn't have to scrub!

- 29/07/09 This sounds great, do you have a solution to hob cleaning too? I find the hobs stain like crazy and nothing gets rid of them. C |
