Advantages: Lets you paint any surface

Disadvantages: Hard to find in the DIY store

ESP as anyone who regularly sits through decorating programmes knows is Easy Surface Primer. Now there are lots of different primers on the market but ESP is the one they keep using on Changing Rooms, which can be used on any surface.

Last year I purchased a tin of this and proceeded to decorate. You paint it on to your surface and a few hours later you can start painting over it. ESP is a clear primer which leaves a slightly tacky feel to the surface.

The first thing I painted was a white melamine TV unit. I had bought this cheap in Argos with some vouchers I was stuck with and wanted to put it in my spare bedroom. After coating the unit with ESP and waiting the required length of time I duly painted the unit using a little matchpot of emulsion paint. The ESP is great, the emulsion went on really well and I did put a thick coat on as I wanted to get a woody effect as well. Once the emulsion was dry I put a topcoat of varnish on to give it a shine, fabulous I thought.

Next project was the bathroom. It had awful pink tiles all over and I wanted them yellow. A quick coating of ESP and again I was working with emulsion. My father told me repeatedly that you cant paint tiles. Well he had to eat his words when he saw my sunny yellow bathroom which I had painted with ordinary emulsion.

The ESP is really great as it allows you to use ordinary paint on surfaces that would otherwise require expensive specialist paints. I would recommend it to anyone.
