Advantages: Special offer prices

Disadvantages: Pungent, chemical smelling, damaged his best towel!!

These tablets have recently been on special offer and what with the credit crunch and the recommended 30 degree wash (to save energy and costs) decided to give them a try.

These latest versions still smell quite strong of chemicals and claim to be biological on the box. Well so is chlorine........and at least you easily recognise that smell, but this one still eludes me.

Nevertheless, the box contains the usual two packs of tabs in irritating plastic wrapping which you can never undo without crumbling the tablet. Except this time the tabs are coated in a purple solidish type gel which gets under your fingernails. Only good thing is this gel really holds the tabs together so no crumbling.

I always put my tabs in the soap drawer alongside the softener, but the pack contains a llittle mesh bag, and explicitly forbids doing anything except putting said bag directly into back of the drum atop the washing.

Hey ho, a load of stable mix coloureds in the drum I added the tabs. I still used 40 degrees since old habits die hard, and it might just even clean a bit better.

Unfortunately, within the machine was the prized, much beloved and damnably expensive football towel. Been washed before several times with no probs, but this time shock, horror has emerged with a tablet shaped lump of the de rigeur bright red colour missing. Was it the gel or was it the whitish tablet itself?? Who knows, who cares, the remaining 22 tablets (or 11 washes) have gone in the bin. The towel is carefully fluffed and folded and I just hope he doesn't notice!!!

Meantime whilst recycling the box I decided to check out the content of each tab:

More than 30% phosphates
5- 15% zeolite, anionic surfactants and non-ionic surfactants
Less than 5% soap, perfume, enzymes and butylphenyl Methypropional.

My guess is its this very last ingredient which is the gel. However the maths still does not add up to 100% and I am left guessing what actually bleached out the colour from the towel......

'Unique gel layer for a brilliant clean 1st time' the box claims...

I would not use them again.
