Advantages: Fun, versatile and comes in many colours
Disadvantages: Not made for big jobs, can be pricey
As a graphics student, it is expected of us to have a multitude of artistic materials ready to use on projects and within sketchbook work. Whilst completing my Graphics A-Level, I decided to buy some spray paints that I could use within the pages of my sketchbook. I should point out that graphics sketchbooks are typically A3 cartridge paper books whereby we are supposed to create as much visual experimentation as possible.
I noticed Wilkinson's sold Plasti-Kote spray paints in a range of colours, and in handy 100ml cans so you wouldn't be wasting money on a huge can of one colour which you may not fully use up. I purchased the spray paint in shades "Gloss Black", "Buttercup Yellow" and "Lavender". I'm not sure the exact price I paid, but it was around £3 per can.
This is where I will advise caution to likeminded art students who try and purchase this from a store rather than online. When I did try and purchase this from Wilkinson's, they initially refused the sale because I did not have any photo I.D to prove my age. Needless to say I found this pretty unbelievable, especially as they then wouldn't allow me to buy the poster paint I also had in my basket! I was nearly 19 at the time, so if you are going to buy this from a shop take photo I.D to avoid this situation!
So, onto using the spray paint. As I have mentioned, my intention was to use this on cartridge paper however on the Plasti-Kote website, it does have a range of ideas in which these spray paints can be used. It also says on the back of the can that it is ideal for using on wood, metal, paper, ceramics, cardboards and most plastics.
I had alot of fun spray painting my book with these, as they certainly allow you to be creative and artistic. The actual spray button what you press to release the paint, allows for a fluent consistency, as it doesn't require alot of pressure to activate. It really is a good idea to use these spray paints outside as of course they are heavy in fumes and toxins you certainly wouldn't want yourself or anyone else to breathe in! In our uni we have a specialist spray booth, however if you don't happen to have some kind of extractor system designed for spray painting, its a good idea to use these outside, or at least open all the windows to let the fumes out.
It says on the bottle that its the "perfect finish-fast", and I was very happy how quick the spray paint dried on my pages in my sketchbook. I would say it dries fairly instantly after spraying it in my book, allowing me to work quick. This time may be slightly longer depending on the surface you spray it on, for example on wood although it should still be pretty quick.
For spray paint/D.I.Y novices such as myself, there is a really informative set of instructions on the back of the can to guide you with whatever you are using the spray paints for. There is information on the distance you should hold the can at to get even results, and also whether you should prime surfaces before use. It also states that each can gives a 1.2msq coverage.
Overall I was really impressed with the Plasti-Kote spray paint range. For the work I was doing, they gave a consistent and fast drying result which allowed me to integrate the spray paint effect into my work, which is not easily to replicate with other materials. I also found it was a fun new technique, and a skill I have been able to continue with in my degree work. Perhaps the only downside, is the fact that at 100ml, they are not made for heavy duty requirements. They can also seem pricey if you don't shop around. Oh, and you also might require I.D when buying them!
