Advantages: drys quick, drys in 45 mins, for house and garden
Disadvantages: stinks, have to have good ventilation
Now I do like shelves but to be honest, they had been varnished and were not done correctly but rather than look at the negative side of the shelves, I thought what can I do with them.
I took them home and give them a light sanding down and this revealed pine underneath. Pine is just not my cup of tea, I thought these would look ideal in any of the rooms that are now been revamped but I did not want to gloss them as the paint causes my asthma to go haywire.
Now why the heck I did not think of this straight away I do not know as I have used several of these products before.
I decided to go to my local DIY shop and they had a small selection of Plasti-Kote but just not the one that I wanted. Should I nip up to B and Q or the art shop as I know they would have them there in stock. In the end I went to B and Q and here they were around £2.50 for a small can of white gloss paint enamel. Not Bad, just enough to cover them and clean them up a bit.
The metallic can is 1/2 the size of a deodorant spray can and has a coloured lid on it. Simple to recognise, if you want white it is a white lid, if you want red, it is a red lid.
The can is mainly yellow with a blue banner and this tells you what the product contains. In this instant, I opted for Gloss White Enamel Finish. Sounds posh eh.
On the back of the can there is customer service details and things like that the product is flammable and make sure when you spray it, that you are in a well ventilated area. They do say spray at room temperature and wear a mask.
So here I was spraying and it just went on perfect, no sponge marks, no brush marks. Before using it, you have to give it a good shake and then you spray about 6 inches away from your item and go back and forth, this then gives it an even effect.
he contents of this little can was 85g but it was enough to do what we wanted. This dried within an hour and it was quickly mounted on my wall. Perfect finish at a cheap price.
Now they do large cans in this and they are normally around £6. These are some of the things you also buy in their range of spray paints.
Speckley effect paints.
Plain Matt Paints
Art and Craft Paints
Garden Paints for metal fences
What you have to be careful when buying this product is make sure that you buy one of the aerosol cans that will do your job. This sounds silly but when you see the displays that they do and you are faced with over 100 cans of sprays, it is easy to pick up one as it is the right colour rather than finding that it is suitable for the job.
Here is a great tip for this one, in our old house we had a old bath and it was chipped and marked, we sprayed a little of this on it and it was just as good as having a new bath. It is touch dry in 15 mins and totally dry in 45mins.
These shelves are now up and in use in my house but already, I have decided that once my new bathroom is fitted, I will take them down, clean and sand again and then they will be speckled green to match my proposed mint green bathroom.
These sell like hotcakes in B and Q and there is always a lot of people looking for their products.
Well at that price, you cannot grumble, instead of throwing away a teak cupboard, find a paint that can give it a new lease of life and add new handles. Spray that awful scratched table to a new modern colour.
Unfortunately we have become a throw away society rather than recycling. It takes about 30 mins to complete a chest of draws. How long does it take you to go and buy a new one. A lot longer I suspect.
They also do really small pots rather like those mini jam jars you can buy and these are normally around
£1.99 and if you have say for instance sprayed something and you wanted to age it, you can buy antique brush on paint and also gold leaf and copper. I have used these before and the effect is wonderful.
Go on go and find something in your house that needs spraying. I have had great fun with all their paints and have fireplaces and all sorts.
