When it comes to gluing things down, you may start thinking of building or wood. Well, how about in the office? Paper is basically compressed wood, but there is a perfect glue stick for use around the office when sticking paper down. Whether you are an artist, create things that need gluing or whether you generally need clue to stick bits of paper down - Pritt Stick is what you need.
I have been using Pritt Stick since I can remember and it works just as well every time. It comes in a few sizes, including squeezable bottles, but I hate these as they are a bit stupid and too much can come out. I either buy the 10g, 20g or 40g normal stick.
They come in basic white containers. They are cylinder-shaped and have a design on them that is distinctly the Pritt Stick design. The Pritt logo is on a kind of arrow and then the word 'stick' is printed on around the tube below this logo in black. At the top, it says 'Quick, Easy, Clean and Washable', which I have to agree with. The back gives an idea of what it's used for and the bottom has another strip saying 'Safe & Solvent Free'. This glue is safe, and can therefore be given to children without the possibility of them harming themselves. The design is pretty unique and I normally spot them from a distance on the shelves.
They work very well too. You simply pull off the lid, screw up the glue and get gluing! The bottom of each stick as a part that you can turn to wind the glue stick inside up or down. This happens because the glue is fixed onto a kind of screw, which twists out or in when you turn the bottom. The lid normally comes off easily, but if you get glue on it, then it sometimes is a bit stuck and harder to get it off. This is the only problem I have found. Also, the glue seems to die after a while and not work so well. Older glues or ones that have not had their lids put back on properly will dry out or become less effective. You then get the other glues, which seem to be really extra gooey but the glue comes off in lumps.
The way the glue should come off is as a fine shiny layer on some paper. It has a rather shiny affect when you apply it. You can then stick another piece of paper to what you have glued and it will stick pretty well. You must make sure you go round all the corners of the paper you are gluing thoroughly, as these are the parts that always start to peel away when the glue becomes less effective. If you glue it well though, it will stay but this can be a pain. I tend to go round the perimeter of the piece of paper and then do a cross in the middle to ensure it sticks down well.
The glue still has a smell to it, which I actually quite like. It is white glue and has a rather sticky feel (obviously), which isn't nice to get on your fingers as they will get very mucky by collecting dirt and dust from everywhere and everything. It is really safe though and washes off anything, as well as being solvent free. The prices are as follows:
The prices aren't bad, but £1.29 for a 10g stick may seem a bit expensive. They don't last long if you are a lot to stick, but if you use it on the odd occasion then they can last ages!
Overall, they are great and do a very good job for sticking down paper to paper. They are pretty weak and aren't designed to stick down card or especially bricks for a house! They are very safe and easy to use as well with a screwing part inside that raises the glue stick out so you can use it. The lid comes off easily, but sometimes gets a bit stuck. I would recommend you try it out!
