Advantages: easy to use, mess free great for children
Disadvantages: not very strong
When I came home from work yesterday my little girl was making a card for her nana's birthday as she always likes to make her own and does a very good job I will say. She was using the well known glue brand Pritt stick which I am sure most of you will have heard of.
Pritt stick comes in a cylinder tube which bears the well known Pritt stick branding of white with black, blue and red on it. It has a capped lid which I feel is easy to get off for an older child but would prove difficult for a smaller child. This gives me confidence in the glue stick as I know my little girl who is six can use it easily whilst my son of 20 months wouldn't be able to remove the cap to reveal the glue. The glue does state that it isn't suitable for children under three because of the small parts (the cap) so knowing he can't get it off is encouraging.
When you take the cap off it reveals the stick of glue underneath which can be used easily. All you need to do is use the bottom part of the glue in black and turn it to bring the glue up to use. My daughter has no trouble using this glue so we don't have to help her every five minutes!
Pritt stick comes in various sizes of 20g and 40g, we have the 40g one which costs £2.67 and the 20g one is £1.32. They also do a power pritt stick which I presume is stronger glue. At first I thought at £2.67 it was a bit pricey but when thinking about I thought it really does last a long time so when weighing this up it is economical. The one we have has lasted for ever in fact I'm really unsure when we bought it so that just shows how long it has lasted.
Pritt stick is solvent free which I feel is essential when children are using it for the safety aspect. Children in my experience love to stick and glue so with pritt stick you are able to let the have the glue (if over three) and glue to their hearts content!
Pritt stick is best for paper and thin card and really I would only use it for this. When it comes to harder materials like materials or thicker card Pritt stick wouldn't be sufficient. If using harder materials you would have to invest in a stronger glue which probably wouldn't be solvent free so you would need to supervise any child whilst using it.
The great thing about Pritt stick is that it is mess free which I'm sure most parents will love. I know in the past when we have used PVA glue it is such a task to get it out and clean up after. You have to use pots and glue sticks which need washing after, and it's quite a runny glue so can end up everywhere! With Pritt stick you don't get any of this so you are more inclined to let your child use it as you know you don't have to spend ages afterwards cleaning up all the mess.
When you have finished using the glue you will need to make sure that the glue is back in the tube properly and the cap is on tightly to stop it drying out. Just make sure you educate your child to do this and this will be avoided.
To sum it up I think Pritt stick is great glue, it is safe to use, easy to use and completely mess free. It is value for money but wouldn't recommend it for use on tougher materials it really is best used for paper and smaller lightweight materials.
Summary: great for children to use and safe but not a glue which is suitable for all gluing
