Advantages: Versatile, durable, cheap, good looking!
Disadvantages: None at all
I have a fantastic 'gadget' in my kitchen and it is something I could not do without.
Is it a clever cooker, a distinctive dishwasher, a fancy fridge or a marvellous microwave?
No - it is my trusty Pyrex Measuring Jug!
The jug to which I refer is the 500ml / 1 pint jug which currently retails at anything between £2 and £4 depending where you buy it from! There is also a 2pint version out there but I find the smaller one more versatile and easier to use and if I do need to measure 2 pints I just fill it twice!
Come to think of I actually have two of these jugs in the cupboard so I could fill both of them! Sorry I'm being silly now but mentioning the fact that I own two of these does give me an idea for the title of this review!
The jug is made from Pyrex glass which is incredibly hardwearing.
You can use it with boiling liquids or ice cold liquids; it can safely go into the cooker, the dishwasher or the microwave. The jug even comes with a 2 year guarantee against heat induced breakages - that's how confident they are in their product!
As I said the jug is made from highly durable glass and it has wide handle which is easy to grip even if you're wearing oven gloves. Opposite the handle is a lip which is just the right size for excellent pouring whether the jug is full or almost empty.
The bright red graduated markings are the same on either side of the jug so it would be suitable for either left or right handed people.
There are two straight lines down the middle of each side of the jug separating the metric and imperial measures. On the left hand side we have 500mls measured out at 50ml intervals. On the right hand side we have 1 pint measured out in 2 fluid ounce intervals and with the ¼, ½ and ¾ pint clearly marked as well. Incidentally for the youngsters among you who have been taught in metric measurements and don't know much about imperial measurements there are 20 fluid ounces in a pint.
As the markings are in bright red it makes measuring dark liquids just as easy as measuring light or clear liquids.
The special Pyrex glass does not absorb flavours or odours and does not stain - of course this in turn means that the contents being measured remain pure. It also means that it always looks new again when it has been washed!
So why is this such a must have item in the kitchen?
I use it for measuring liquids when I am baking - it regularly gets used for measuring the milk for my muffins.
The depth of the jug makes it an ideal container for beating eggs to add to baking without getting bits of egg everywhere!
I make my gravy in it as it withstands the temperature of the boiling water.
I use it to either make custard in the microwave or to heat ready made custard.
I even fill it with water and wander round the house watering my house plants!
It's a great versatile jug, it always looks smart and I wouldn't be without it in my kitchen - so there!
I apologise for the title - I couldn't resist it!
Summary: A great jug - every kitchen should have at least one!
